Wonder Womanhas sported many costumes over the years—some becoming iconic and others facing their fair share of criticism. However, one costume stands out as both iconic and flawed, thanks to a major design oversight that made it impractical. Now, a recent redesign has finally corrected that flaw, transforming this classic look into something truly perfect.

From Skirts to Shorts: DC Knew Wonder Woman’s OG Costume Was Impractical

Main Cover by Jon L. Blummer & Harry G. Peter forSensation Comics#1 (1941)

Wonder Woman—created by William Moulton Marston, H.G. Peter, Sadie Elizabeth Holloway, and Olive Byrne—first appeared inAll Star Comics#8 (1941) before making her official debut inSensation Comics#1 (1942). In her original appearance, Diana wore her signature colors of red, blue, and gold, along with her Bracelets of Submission and tiara—design elements that remain part of her iconic look more than 80 years later. However, where this classic design differs from her modern-day appearance is in herred bustier featuringthe classic golden eagle emblemand, most notably, her flowing star-spangled skirt.

While this costume will always be iconic, it was also one of Wonder Woman’s most impractical designs, asa flimsy skirt isn’t exactly ideal for combat. This impracticality led to a relatively quick transition from the skirt to shorts, as DC recognized that an Amazon warrior needed a more durable and practical outfit for the epic battles she would face. Now, in Dan Mora’s variant cover forNew History of the DC Universe#1, the brilliant artist has reimagined this classic design in a way that resolves its impracticality while preserving all the iconic elements.

Dan Mora Reimagines Wonder Woman’s Original Costume

At first glance, Mora’s art may seem like a perfect reimagining of Wonder Woman’s original costume. However, a closer look reveals that Diana is actually sporting a pair of star-spangled shorts beneath the skirt, transforming it into a skirt-shorts hybrid and eliminating the impracticality of wearing a flowy skirt in battle. This clever design tweak allows Wonder Woman to keep her flowing skirt without the risk of flashing opponents like Darkseid mid-fight. It’s a subtle, simple adjustment on Mora’s part, but it makes all the difference. Plus, seeing classicWonder Womanrendered in Mora’s signature style is a treat in itself.
