The founders of Signal, Moxie Marlinspike and Brian Acton, created the Signal Foundation which owns the app, according tothe Signal Foundation website. Acton is also a co-founder of WhatsApp and the current CEO of the Signal Foundation, taking over from Marlinspike who had served as CEO until 2022.
The Signal Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. In a2018 Signal blog post, co-founders Marlinspike and Action said that they believe that a nonprofit foundation will be the best way to keep Signal available, low in cost, and high in security. They also highlight that the technology used to create Signal is open-source, meaning anyone can see how it works and use the tech to enhance privacy and security on other online platforms.
Marlinspike worked in the tech world in San Francisco for many years, eventually becoming the head of cybersecurity at Twitter. Being a huge advocate of online privacy, he left that role to create Signal and other apps like it. He was primarily responsible for maintaining it and popularizing it until his departure. He stressed that Signal’s encryption made it impossible for anyone, including law enforcement and the Signal Foundation itself, to read users’ messages sent through the app.
This encryption is now also used on other popular apps like WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger, according toTech Times, although different platforms have different rules regarding law enforcement and privacy.
