What Is Samsung’s Self-Repair Program and How Does It Work?

Few things in life are as infuriating as a busted phone or tablet. We rely on these devices hour-by-hour, so we feel the punch in a pinch when we lose access and have to send it in for repair. Sometimes, it can take weeks for your device to return to you.

If you are a Samsung user that doesn’t have that kind of time and would prefer to repair your own device, check out Samsung’s Self-Repair program. First, let’s see where the program is offered.

How Does the Samsung Self-Repair Program Work?

In collaboration withiFixit, Samsung’s Self-Repair Program sells self-repair kits for eligible devices. It’s similar toMicrosoft and iFixIt’s partnership programto make fixing Microsoft Surface devices at home easier.

If you’re unfamiliar with iFixit, know that it offers all-encompassing, specialized kits made for one specific task. The kit you will receive in the mail via Samsung’s Self-Repair Program works in the same way. Pop that bad boy open, and you’ll have everything in front of you needed to make the repair. Just bring a steady hand, decent lighting, and patience.

Before you select a kit to purchase, notice two important details about these kits:

The latter point is a sweet perk. But the peace of mind of knowing that you’re getting genuine parts designed to work specifically for your Samsung device is even more reason to try this repair option out if you don’t mind getting your hands dirty.

If you’re having second thoughts and would rather send your Samsung device to be repaired by an authorized technician, be sure toenable maintenance mode on your Samsung deviceto protect your personal information.

All Samsung Self-Repair Program kits come with a 90-day warranty.

Should You Self-Repair Ineligible Devices via a Third-Party Solution?

As you’ve already noticed, not every Samsung device is eligible for Samsung’s Self-Repair Program. If that describes your device, yet you still want to pursue a DIY approach to repairing your Samsung device, you’re not entirely out of luck.

iFixit itself may have the OEM parts you need to fix your device, albeit without a kit courtesy of Samsung’s Self-Repair Program. Search for your device at the top of the homepage in theSearchfield. Chances are, you’ll find your device—select it when you do.

Let’s use an old device like the Galaxy S4 as an example. I searched for the device, found it, and now I’m looking at everything iFixit has available for Galaxy S4.

As you can see, the page features specific parts, tools, and even a user manual. Considering the Galaxy S4 is an old model, many of these parts were out of stock. But it allows you to get a lead on the exact part you need so you can purchase it third-party.

Do note that if you choose to repair a device that isn’t covered by Samsung’s Self-Repair Program, you’re voiding the warranty. But if it’s already out of warranty and you’ve done this kind of thing before, the only thing you’re risking is a little wasted time.

Samsung’s Self-Repair Program Puts the Repair Process in Your Hands

It’s nice to see manufacturers like Samsung finally giving users with hands-on experience the freedom to repair their devices on their own. Samsung has gone a step further by providing all-in-one kits featuring OEM parts and protected by a 90-day warranty.

Here’s to hoping Samsung continues rolling out this convenient program to more regions and devices in the coming years.
