It’s been in the pipeline, nowTwitter will finally start removing all blue checkmarks from users' profileson April 1, 2023—well, non-Twitter Blue checkmarks. Twitter calls them “legacy verified checkmarks”, which are the blue ticks obtained before Elon Musk took over Twitter.

Musk has been very vocal about making Twitter users pay for perks on Twitter, which hasn’t gone down well with many tweeps who were verified in the pre-Musk era. They believe selling Twitter verification is a bad idea.

If you have a legacy verified checkmark on your Twitter profile, you may wonder what your options are after it’s removed in April. Let’s have a look below.

1. Twitter Blue

This is a no-brainer. Twitter Blue is one of the options Twitter provides in its announcements, so the company really wants you to sign up. When you get a Twitter Blue subscription, nothing changes except that you’ll be paying to keep the blue tick on your profile, so you’ll have to decidewhether Twitter Blue is worth the money.

Twitter Blue costs between $8 and $11 per month, depending on whether you get it on web or mobile.

2. Verified for Organizations Subscription

If your Twitter account is a business account or represents an organization, you can make this clear by getting a subscription for organizations called Verified for Organizations. Instead of a blue checkmark, businesses and non-profits get a gold checkmark next to their account name and a square-shaped profile picture. Governmental and multilateral organizations get a gray checkmark and circular profile picture.

There are two main benefits to becoming a verified organization on Twitter:

3. Organization Affiliate

As mentioned above, organizations can have a network of Twitter accounts associated with their main account. These can include company employees, leaders, support accounts, and more.

Affiliate accounts have the profile picture of the organization they’re associated with shown as an icon next to their account name. This appears everywhere on Twitter, including the affiliate account’s bio and in search results. It helps to establish your Twitter account as legitimate and trustworthy.

For example, Twitter’s Support account has the official Twitter account’sprofile iconnext to the account name and gold checkmark, as do all of Twitter’s affiliated accounts.

You can speak with your company about this if it doesn’t already have it set up. Their decision will depend on the nature of your job and the company’s social media policy. For example, journalists who tweet about work can benefit from this option.

4. Professional Account

If you’re a creator, publisher, or own a brand or business, you may switch to a professional account. Just keep in mind that this doesn’t mean you’ll get a checkmark on your profile.

Twitter lets you choose from a list of categories to describe your account. The category you pick will appear on your profile. It lets people know what to expect from your account and establishes a level of trust.

5. Do Nothing

If Twitter Blue isn’t for you, and you aren’t interested in the options we’ve mentioned, that’s okay too. You’re under no obligation to do anything to your account that you aren’t comfortable with. Simply use Twitter like everyone else.

Chances are you’ve built rapport with your followers and the relevant Twitter community if you’re part of the legacy verified checkmark gang. You won’t lose your footing when you lose your blue tick.
