If you are a frequent BeReal user, you have probably noticed the banner introducing you to RealGroups—the feature that lets you create groups on the app. Here’s what you need to know about RealGroups and whether the feature is safe and useful.

What Are RealGroups on BeReal?

RealGroups are similar to group chats on iMessage or Instagram DMs, but more tailored to the BeReal platform. You can add friends, name the group, and send messages to that group.

Depending on your settings, BeReal will also send you specificTime to BeRealnotifications just for that group to share with each other—separate from the main BeReal notification of the day for all users.

RealGroups were added to the growing list ofuseful BeReal featuresto give frequent users more things to do on the app.

Only the people in your group can see the BeReal you post when you get the notification for that group. Be sure not to confuse it with the main BeReal feed.

you may turn offTime to BeRealnotifications, so the group won’t receive any. Then, the RealGroup is for messaging only.

RealGroups are the only way to directly message others in the app, since RealChats were removed. You can also comment on public BeReals, but then everyone else can see your conversation.

Are RealGroups Safe to Send Messages In?

The BeReal websitenotes that messages sent in RealGroups are not end-to-end encrypted. So, while only your friends in the group should be able to see your messages, be careful not to send anything personal or inappropriate. The lack of end-to-end encryption means that there is a slight risk of someone else seeing something they shouldn’t.
