Summary
Suits: L.A.is officially moving forward, but I’m still waiting for one big reveal about the story of the upcomingSuitsspinoff. Shortly after the pilot wrapped filming,Suits: L.A.has been given a full series order. TheSuitsspinoff show set in Los Angeles will include names such as Stephen Amell and Josh McDermitt, with the story taking place in an entertainment law firm founded by Ted Black and Stuart Lane. Although several characters have been revealed forSuits: L.A.’s pilot,noSuitscameos have been confirmed so far.
Suitsseason 9’s finalewas a perfect ending to the show. Still, onceSuitsbroke all sorts of streaming records on Netflix in 2023, I assumed that the franchise was going to return somehow. Fortunately, instead of risking ruiningSuits’ ending with a new season, a spinoff is happening instead. WhileSuits: L.A.is its own thing and features an all-new set of characters, it is difficult not to compare the spinoff to what the original show did.

Mike Ross’ Secret Was Suits’ Premise, So What’s The Catch With Suits L.A.?
Will Suits: L.A. Have Its Version Of Mike’s Secret & Photographic Memory?
As with many of the USA Network shows,Suitshad a very unique premise that the set narrative for its first season. In addition to all of the legal drama procedure tropes, the show also included a gimmick – Mike Ross’ secret. Whereas Harvey Specter was a high-profile lawyer who did not play the rules, Mike was a fraud who had never been to law school.Mike’s secret was the “catch” forSuits, something that would separate the show from other legal dramas. Mike’s secret was not the only gimmick inSuits, as he also had a superhuman photographic memory.
Stephen Amell’s Ted Black is a former NY prosecutor who moved to Los Angeles over a decade ago and founded his own firm focused on entertainment law.

Considering that theSuitsuniverse is returning withSuits: L.A., I cannot help but wonder what the catch with the spinoff will be. So far, nothing too extraordinary has been revealed aboutSuits: L.A.’s characters.Stephen Amell’s Ted Black is a former NY prosecutorwho moved to Los Angeles over a decade ago and founded his own firm focused on entertainment law.Suits: L.A.also includes younger partners competing for a spot at the top, which is not too surprising. I’m interested to learn whatSuits: L.A.’s major secret or gimmick will be, assuming there will be one.
Suits Eventually Grew Beyond Its Mike Ross Gimmick
Suits Was Much More Than Mike Ross’ Secret
Even thoughSuits’ first season was defined by its Mike Ross gimmick, the show eventually grew beyond that. A problem that even some of the best USA Network shows dealt with was relying too much on a very specific gimmick or character trait, resulting in series that were very formulaic and predictable.Suitsavoided that problem by letting its story evolve beyond Mike Ross’ secret and photographic memory. Mike would often solve the case of the week in season 1 using his photographic memory, a trope that became tiresome very fast.
Harvey Specter becameSuits’ main characteras the show went on, which is a testament to how much the series changed. Instead of letting Mike’s secret set the tone for the entirety of the show,Suitsfocused instead on the bond between Harvey and Mike. MostSuitscharacters eventually learned the truth about Mike, not to mention that he was exposed as a fraud and arrested for his crimes. Thanks to its engaging storylines and compelling characters,Suitsproved that it was more than just another procedural with a fun gimmick.

Suits: L.A. Does Not Need A Mike Ross-Type Of Twist (But It Would Be Fun)
Suits: L.A. Can Take A Different Route From Suits
IfSuits’ later seasons proved anything is that the show was right in moving away from Mike’s secret and “superpowers.” Seeing Harvey, Mike, and the others trying to solve other issues using whatever tools and strategies they had was much more interesting than having Mike save the day by remembering something thanks to his photographic memory. Additionally, Mike could only be a fraud for so long because it became ridiculously unbelievable that he had not been exposed yet. Therefore,I would enjoy it ifSuits: L.A.had no “tricks”and was instead a more straightforward legal drama.
Suits: L.A.’s release date hasn’t been announced yet.
Whether Mike’s Harvard fraud will have a counterpart inSuits: L.A.remains to be seen. The TV landscape has changed a lot sinceSuitsseason 1 premiered on USA Network. Procedurals with gimmicks are not that common anymore, and audiences are eager for more complex types of storytelling. That said, it could be fun ifSuits: L.A.did have its own version of Mike’s secret. The official character description for Ted Black mentions“events from years ago”coming back to haunt him, which could perhaps be the ultimate secret that will define his character.
