Twisters' Box Office Projections Explained

& What It Needs To Make

Twistersis projected to open to $50-$55 million, which is within the range of whatA Quiet Place: Day One($52 million) opened to late last month. Perhaps more impressively,Twisters' opening weekend is projected to beat its predecessor, which made $41 million in its opening weekend and went on to make $495 million worldwide, the second-highest-grossing film of 1996 behind fellow disaster filmIndependence Day($817 million). However, when adjusted for inflation, the original movie’s opening weekend would be approximately $82 million, and its total gross close to $1 billion.

Twisterswas produced on a budgetof $155-$200 million, meaning it will need to have a strong performance worldwide to justify that price tag. Generally, for a movie to be profitable, it needs to earn two and half times its production budget, meaningTwisterswill have to make approximately $385-500 million to be considered a box office success. The sequel has already earned around $12 million and counting from international markets which, when added to its projected opening weekend of $50-$55 million, it should be close to crossing the century mark worldwide by the end of its opening weekend.

After a slow start to the year, the 2024 box office has picked up withInside Out 2, the biggest hit of the year,Despicable Me 4, andLonglegs. If this trend continues,Twisterscould do some damage and end up performing very well in theaters. However, it only has one weekend to itself beforeDeadpool & Wolverinereleases on July 16, which is bound to be the biggest opening ever for an R-rated movie.
