Twisters' Box Office Success Explained

The Disaster Sequel Is Exceeding Expectations

Even before it was released in theaters in the United States,Twistershad a strong international debut. It was released internationally on July 10 and made an impressive $12 million, setting the stage for a promising global run. Domestically, the sequel was projected to make $50-$55 million in its opening weekend at the box office. However,Twistersblew away its projections with $81 million, delivering the best opening weekend ever for a disaster film. Additionally, it beat the original movie’s $41 million opening weekend from 1996 which, when adjusted for inflation, would be around the same as the sequel’s.

The sequel’s $81 million debut is also the third-biggest opening weekend of 2024 behindDune: Part Two($82 million) andInside Out 2($154 million). To date, it’s made around $102 million domestically combined with about $43 million internationally for a total of $145 million worldwide. TheoriginalTwistermade $495 million worldwide, the second-highest-grossing film of 1996 (about $1 billion when adjusted for inflation). After the sequel’s strong opening weekend,Twistershas set its sights on surpassing the original movieand perhaps even its total inflation-adjusted gross.
