Getting the ace in the hole for today’sConnectionspuzzle is a little more challenging due to a fair amount of crossover words. These are words that could be in several different categories and often waste your possible guesses. We havehints at every level to help you overcome those challenges, as there are hints at what the categories are, the category names, and full spoilers below.

If you are looking for a different puzzle, try theNYT’sTilesgame, which asks you to make matches based on the images in the puzzle. It is a bitlike deconstructing a mosaic, as opposed to putting one together. This makesTilesandVertexopposites of each other, in a way. Playing both will keep your mind active and your chances of success on at least one of them higher.

Today’s Connections Category Hints

July 29 #413

There are a few words that cross over and could make things harder for you to finish the puzzle successfully. To avoid that, we have some hints for you:

With those hints in mind, you can attempt to categorize the words on your own, or you can continue scrolling to get the category names and the answers for them later:

The Coliseum in Connections Categories July 29

COLISEUM

DOME

Sports are the talk of the town as the Olympics start, and thenames of all of the various sports stadiumsare listed here. It is nice to see a slightly theme-based puzzle today. Beyond that, knowing these terms will be useful as the Olympics get into full swing, and we can watch the fight for gold, silver, and bronze take place. Get ready to cheer for your favorite athlete and enjoy the spectacle while you can.

DRIVE

LANE

ALLEY and COURT both feel like words that could go with BOWL and GUTTER to be a category all about bowling. While that would give me late-90s and early-2000s nostalgia, particularly concerning every birthday party ever that was not at a skating rink, it is not today’s category. It is instead about much more boringstreet names that are used to differentiate roads from each other. Perhaps one day there will be a bowling category.

8 NYT Spelling Bee Strategies To Keep Your Streak Alive

The Spelling Bee puzzles created as a New York Times game build a streak of correct answers to get you more points, but they can be hard to keep.

LIBRA

SOLFEGE

This one was the last category I put together and was frankly lucky that it was. I had no idea why they went together when I got to it, but it does make sense now.SOLFEGE, as it turns out, is the term for scalesin music that 12 years of playing clarinet never taught me. It did make me think about theAristocats, and despite the problems it now has from a modern lens, I do still love the song about scales and arpeggios.

TEAPOT

WHALE

I got fairly lucky with this one too. I had a good idea that FOUNTAIN, GUTTER, and TEAPOT went together after solving the first two categories. However, I did not exactly why other than they all sounded like they mighthave to do with pouring liquid, and it turns out I was close to right. I had no reason to guess WHALE at the time, but my instinct told me it was likely WHALE over anything else, so I managed to get it right despite the odds.

Now that I have attempted to dissect twelve years of music to think about one term, I am likely going to wind down by playing another game. If you also want to wind down and play another puzzles, check out one of the following:
