Microsoft started rolling out Windows 11 24H2 in October, bringing a slew of changes, including faster downloads for OS updates. However, this version is plagued with bugs, including several that are tied to specific apps.
Because of the issues surrounding the release of Windows 11 24H2, Microsoft has paused the rollout of the update to computers running any of these affected apps. While you may manually download and install the update, doing so with any affected apps installed could result in Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) errors or lowered performance.

These Apps Will Break Windows Update 24H2
Microsoft says that the apps affecting the new update include some common apps you may have installed on your PC. One of the most widespread apps is Easy Anti-Cheat.
If you aren’t well-versed inwhat anti-cheat software isor what games use it, then this one can be tricky. Many popular games, like Elden Ring, Fortnite, and Apex Legends, use software like Easy Anti-Cheat to stop hackers from getting an unfair advantage in multiplayer matches. If you play any game that uses Easy Anti-Cheat, you could encounter issues after updating.

Microsoft has also reported issues with Safe Exam Browser, a popular app businesses and universities use to conduct internal exams more securely. If you’re currently attending any online courses, you may run into issues with the update. However, Microsoft says that only version 3.7 or lower should be affected by these issues.
Other widespread apps are confirmed to cause issues with the new update, including wallpaper customization apps. While Microsoft hasn’t mentioned any specific apps like Wallpaper Engine, it does note that several are included in the pause, and thus, the issue does not have an expected resolution date just yet.
A popular voice mod application called Voicemeeter has also caused some issues with Windows 11 update 24H2. The issue is specifically tied to how Voicemeeter’s driver interacts with Windows 11’s memory manager in update 24H2. As such, Microsoft has paused updates to devices running this app, too.
This Unexpected App Could Keep You From Installing the Update
One app you might not expect to encounter issues with is Asphalt 8: Airborne. This is a racing game that Microsoft used to bundle with installs of Windows 10 and Windows 11, which means you might not even realize it’s keeping you from getting the update.
You can easily check if it’s installed on your computer by opening the Microsoft Store and searching for “Asphalt 8: Airborne” in the search bar. If it doesn’t say it’s installed, this isn’t what’s keeping you from getting the new update.
Unfortunately, these aren’t the only issues Microsoft has reported with Windows 11 update 24H2. There are also several other factors that Microsoft has paused updates because of; you shouldcheck out the full list on Microsoft’s websiteto make sure nothing on it applies to you.
If you do have any of these apps installed, you can stillmanually install the latest Windows updates. However, Microsoft recommends holding out on the update for now or uninstalling the affected apps, as running them on the updated version could cause BSOD errors and performance issues.
