Summary

The Arkseason 2 premieres on July 17 and picks up directly after the explosion that left half of the main cast unaccounted for. Shortly after Trust’s device successfully rotates Proxima B, the crew realizes that part of the planet is covered in methane and will detonate once exposed to the sun. Ark One is badly damaged by the blast, making it nearly impossible for the ship to survive another journey through space. However, Ark Fifteen remains intact, which leads to a tentative alliance between Garnet and Commander Maddox.

Christie Burke, who plays the lieutenant-turned-captain, believes that a friendship between the women ispossible inThe Arkseason 2due to her character’s forgiving nature. Showrunners Dean Devlin and Jonathan Glassner also emphasize that the survival of mankind remains at the forefront of everyone’s minds. While their shared goal doesn’t guarantee peace, there’s hope that both crews will be able to put aside their differences to reach an inhabitable planet in the upcoming episodes.

There Is Hope Beyond Proxima B In The Ark Season 2

Screen Rant: The entirety of season 1 centered around these characters trying to make it to Proxima B, but that’s no longer an option. Ark One is damaged, we don’t know who’s alive, so what’s next? Where do we go from here?

Jonathan Glassner: Well, there’s only so much we can tell you because we don’t want to give any spoilers, but needless to say, there is hope. There’s another planet, and we find out about the other planet, and we have a journey to figure out how to get there with our broken ship.

Garnet isn’t just responsible for her own survival, she’s been entrusted with the lives of everyone on Ark One. How will that pressure intensify now that these plans have changed so drastically?

Christie Burke: It won’t affect her at all. She’ll be totally fine. No, I’m just kidding. [Laughs] We leave season 1 with her feeling like she’s found her family, and we start season 2 in that same place where she’s starting to have to lead from her heart. I think that can be difficult for her because she’s never had to do that before.

THe Ark season 2 still 5

She has skin in the game now, and I think decisions are harder for her to make because it means she’s going to have to risk potentially losing people that she doesn’t want to lose. I think the pressure is tenfold. This season is crazy. It’s unpredictable. There’s so much that happens like I didn’t even expect.

She says in the pilot that she has no ambition in governing, but Garnet is such a good leader. Now that she’s taken on this responsibility, do you think she could ever really give it up?

The Ark TV Series Poster

Christie Burke: I think that’s a really good question. I don’t know if I have an answer. I wait for Jonathan Glassner to write me something really beautiful to say that maybe would give me the answer, but I don’t really know. I think she wants to lead herself.

I think by the end of season 1 she’s realizing that, yes, she’s really good at this job, but she doesn’t really want to do it. She’s only doing it because she wants to complete her mission, essentially, and I think there’s a part of her that wants to just lead herself. She’s never had to do that before.

Burke Hopes Fans Will Be “Pleasantly Surprised” By The Direction Of Garnet And Lane’s Relationship

I need to ask about Felix, because he’s such a pure soul, and he’s just trying to ensure everyone is okay. Is there hope that his daughter may still be alive?

Jonathan Glassner: Maybe yes, maybe no. I can’t tell you. His search for her will continue. I can say that much.

Dean Devlin: I think the fun part of this show is that there’s so much that we learned about the characters in season 1, and in season 2, we discover there’s so much more we didn’t know, and where those roads go are always surprising on the show—often satisfying and sometimes heartbreaking. I think all the characters, but Felix as well—I think it’s going to go some directions that people are going to really be surprised about this year.

My favorite part about TV is when things happen that even the creators don’t expect—maybe there’s a character or a story that goes in a different direction than intended. Did you two have that experience at all while writing season 1? Did any of the characters or relationships end up surprising you?

Jonathan Glassner: I would say it happened all the time. I can’t single out any single one. As you work with a new cast that you’re just getting to know, you start to see them do things and little nuances that they play that you didn’t even think about, and it leads you down a path as a writer. Why did Garnet just give him that funny little look? What did that mean? And then you talk about it in the writers room, and you go, “Well, that would be interesting. Maybe we should try that,” and you go down the path. It happened a lot on the show.

Christie Burke: That’s because I give a lot of funny looks. My acting is compiled of funny looks, so that was Jonathan being really nice.

Jonathan Glassner: Christie is one of the best non-verbal actors I’ve worked with. Whenever you cut to a reaction from her, she’s giving you something. And I’m not saying that just to kiss up. It’s true. It’s very true.

On that same note, I love the partnership that forms between Garnet and Lane. Can you talk a bit about how that relationship has evolved since they first met, and what it may look like going forward?

Christie Burke: I think their relationship progresses. Without giving anything away, he starts to become the man that Garnet always wanted him to be. I guess we find out what that really does to her emotionally and physically, and I think the fans are going to be pleasantly surprised about where that all goes.

Jonathan Glassner: At the end of last season, he became a hero. He went on a suicidal mission to save everybody, and then Garnet saved him, so that takes the relationship in a whole different direction.

Garnet Could Make Peace With Evelyn Following The Events Of The Season 1 Finale

Garnet and Evelyn both surprised each other in the finale. After everything that’s happened, is a friendship between them really possible this season?

Christie Burke: Yeah, I think so. One of my favorite traits about Garnet, that Jonathan and the amazing writers have written, is that she’s blindly trusting people. She’s so forgiving. I think she’ll always give somebody a second chance, which is one of my favorite things about her. So yeah, of course. There are always opportunities for redemption in any relationship when it comes to Garnet.

Jonathan Glassner: Garnet and the whole crew don’t forget the uber mission of this whole thing, which is to save humanity, and a ship full of people on Maddox’s ship are still people.

Christie Burke: Yeah, and she’s so non-biased too. She’s so good at seeing both sides. She’s very empathetic in the sense that she can see why Evelyn did what she did, and she can see why she’s done what she’s done. She’s very good at seeing the two sides of the coin and not having any feelings about it, in the sense of leading from that place.

Dean Devlin: I think the characters this season are also acutely aware of how few humans are left alive. When you start to think about it in that context, the ability to be more empathetic and generous becomes part of the survival of mankind.

Christie Burke: And that they’re potentially not that far away from inhabiting a planet that they’re all going to have to live on together and work together on. She might not like Evelyn, but it doesn’t matter. The point is the mission and saving humanity and creating an environment where everyone can live peacefully together.
