Summary

Thirty years after his glamorously dressed, ABBA-filled trek across the Australian outback ended, Guy Pearce addresses the status ofThe Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert’s recently confirmed sequel. Helmed by Stephan Elliott and starring Pearce, Hugo Weaving, and Terrence Stamp, the comedy focuses on two drag queens and a transgender woman’s journey across the outback to perform at an Alice Springs resort. Catty and sardonic, Pearce’s Adam is often the loudest of the trio for better and worse, with the performer slyly using his mother’s wealth to purchase the bus they christen Priscilla.

With a cult classic status that remains to this day, Pierce addressed the status of the sequel toThe Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the DeserttoScreen Rant. No updates at this stage. We’re talking about it. It’s something that we all think would be a great idea if it’s good. We don’t want to ruin the first one by making the second one any less than it should be, which nobody wants, of course. We’re definitely very aware that we need to give the audience, it needs to feel authentic, but we need to give the audience something that we know they’re going to love, obviously. That film is a well-loved movie, so no updates, I’m afraid at this stage. There’s a script being worked on, and we’re in discussions about it.

HowThe Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desertopened Australia’s Hearts

It could once more highlight the importance of unity and community among the LGBTQ+ community and offer the opportunity to address changing queer culture, be it along the stretch of road from Sydney to Alice Springs or across the globe.

The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desertis a cult classic that helped make anincredible impact on Australia and thewider LGBTQ+ movement across the globe. While the feature doesn’t shy away from the uglier struggles the community faces as the trio is subject to various forms of bigotry, it also shows a wonderful portrayal of unity between the three despite their arguments and acceptance across various generations with the friends and family they meet along the way. As such, the movie is a loving, hilarious celebration of building a safe community, no matter where it may roam.

10 LGBTQ+ Movies That Changed Cinema Forever

Pride Month is a time to celebrate the LGBTQ+ community and diversity of all kinds, and these movies helped changed the cinematic landscape for good.

Furthermore, not only didPriscilla, Queen of the Desertbecome embraced by Australia at a time when the LGBTQ+ community was treated with more hostility, but many elements remain standout representations. Stamp’s Bernadette is a sensitive portrayal of a transgender woman at a time when there was little representation, as she becomes the caring maternal figure who helps guide Adam in finding his way. While elements such ascasting a cisgender man as a transgender womanand using Bernadette’s deadname as a joke are poor choices, the character is a respectful portrayal of a transgender woman to this day.

With a greater understanding by the wider world about the LGBTQ+ community and new tensions rising, apotential sequel toThe Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desertwould be appreciated. It could once more highlight the importance of unity and community among the LGBTQ+ community and offer the opportunity to address changing queer culture, be it along the stretch of road from Sydney to Alice Springs or across the globe. However, Pearce’s response shows that much care is being taken to ensure Adam, Bernadette, and Tick’s next trip honors the original and its impact.
