With the discontinuation of Authy’s desktop app in January 2024, thousands of users are looking for a 2FA desktop replacement. Thankfully, there are heaps of excellent authenticator applications and browser extensions that you can use to replace Authy.

Let’s look at each in turn.
1. 1Password
1Passwordis one of the best applications you may use to replace Authy. While 1Password primarily serves as a password manager, it supports TOTP (Time-based One-Time Password) and is available as a desktop client on Windows, Linux, and MacOS.
1Password is best when used as a browser extension since you can scan a 2FA setup QR code andconfigure multi-factor authentication in just a few clicks. Since your one-time passcodes are shown side-by-side with websites, signing in with 1Password is fantastically simple.
Like Authy, 1Password restricts new device registrations to decrease the likelihood that a hacker could access your passwords and 2FA. Authy accomplishes this by allowing users to enable or disable multi-device access, while 1Password gives you a secret code to use with your password to register new devices.
The only real downside is the $2.99 per month subscription.

2. Authenticator.cc
If you’d prefer a simple and free Authy alternative,Authenticator.ccmight be the perfect browser extension for you. It’s available for download on Google Chrome, Firefox, and Microsoft Edge and supports syncing across multiple devices.
Much like Authy, Authenticator.cc supports backups in unencrypted and encrypted formats. Authenticator.cc generates backups in a standardized format, so despite the browser extension’s lack of support for proper exporting, you can transfer your data to alternatives like Aegis, FreeOTP+, and Authenticator (GNOME).
The main drawback to Authenticator.cc is that it’s only available as a browser extension. You can’t install a desktop client or access Authenticator.cc from a smartphone app. It’s less versatile, but you shouldn’t lose access to your data as long as you remember your browser login.
Authenticator.cc also doesn’t supportsophisticated protection features like biometrics, though it does share a convenient master password feature with Authy. It isn’t a complex solution to 2FA, but if you’re looking for something simple and easy to use that gets the job done, Authenticator.cc is ideal.

3. KeePassXC
One of the best Authy alternatives isKeePassXC. Like Authy, KeePassXC is available as a desktop client on Windows, Linux, and MacOS, as well as a browser extension. Once you’ve added accounts to KeePassXC, you can add TOTP to individual entries.

Despite that, you don’t actually have to store your username and password in KeePassXC—you can create entries for TOTP codes without including any other sensitive information.

2FASis a browser-based alternative to Authy that enables you to securely access your accounts at home or on the go. 2FAS syncs across all your devices, making authentication a simple one-click procedure.
2FAS’s syncing gives it a few clear advantages over alternatives like Authenticator.cc, since you don’t have to use your desktop browser for authentication. Like Authy, you can view and manage all devices connected to your 2FAS account, so it’s easy to monitor for and deal with any unauthorized access issues.
One of the main drawbacks to 2FAS is that you can’t use the browser extension without pairing it with the 2FAS mobile app. It’s also somewhat unwieldy compared to other browser extensions since it communicates through desktop notifications and doesn’t provide an interface.
You can only add authentication tokens through the smartphone app. Once you’ve added a few accounts to 2FAS, you can quickly enter authentication codes by selecting the text field and clicking the 2FAS icon in your browser toolbar.

5. Bitwarden Authenticator
Last but not least of the Authy alternatives isBitwarden Authenticator, a powerful password manager with a built-in TOTP feature. You’ll need to purchase the $10 annual plan to access Bitwarden Authenticator, but the compelling quality and convenience of Bitwarden make it worthwhile.
Beyond the Bitwarden Windows, MacOS, and Linux desktop client, you can use Bitwarden as a browser extension on practicallyanypopular browser. Beyond Safari, Microsoft Edge, Chrome, and Firefox, niche favorites like DuckDuckGo and Vivaldi are readily supported.You can even self-host Bitwarden. And no matter how you use Bitwarden, your annual subscription will pay for access to priority customer support.
Bitwarden’s comprehensive security is immediately impressive. 6. Authy Smartphone App
If you aren’t pleased with any of the Authy desktop alternatives, it’s worth noting that Authy itself isn’t going away for good. you may still protect your accounts and authenticate your logins using the Authy app, available for Android and iOS. Unfortunately, because Authy lacks syncing and export features, you’ll need to re-enable 2FA and manually add your tokens to the Authy app to make the transition.
