Summary

“Gradarius Firmus Victoria”, AFC Richmond’s team motto inTed Lasso, is a Latin phrase with some important meaning to the show beyond its literal translation. Ted Lasso (Jason Sudeikis) was a constant source of adages, quips, and old-fashioned advice as the Southern-bred coach of an English football team.Ted Lasso’s lines about what it means to be a goldfishand other such off-the-wall quotations don’t make much sense when he first says them, but after some thought, it becomes apparent he’s speaking in more than just folksy quips, and his advice is based in real wisdom.

It’s AFC Richmond that is the recipient of many of Ted’s oddest axioms.AFC Richmond may not be a real football team, but it has all the pageantry and tradition of a legitimate football club. Like real soccer clubs, AFC Richmond has a Latin motto. Arsenal hasVictoria Concordia Crescit(victory through harmony), Manchester City hasSuperbia in Proelio(pride in battle), etc. These bite-sized inspirational quotes are exactly the type of thing Ted can connect to, so it’s obvious the meaning ofGradarius Firmus Victoriawould be a significant part of the show.

AFC Richmond’s “Gradarius Firmus Victoria” Motto Means “Taking Little Steps Toward Victory”

Ted Lasso Realizes His Team Has To Go Slow And Steady To Win

Literally translated from Latin,Gradarius Firmus Victoriameans “taking little steps toward victory”.This motto can be found everywhere around the AFC Richmond facility. It’s painted on the walls in locker rooms, outside on the stands, and in the hallways between the offices. It’s so prevalent it’s easy to forget it’s there. The saying basically means “slow and steady wins the race”. It’s not exactly the most inspiring or fiery motto, but it is wise, and it fits perfectly with AFC Richmond and Ted.

AFC Richmond is heavily inspired by Crystal Palace F.C., a real English Premier League team, with its color scheme and uniforms though Crystal Palace does not have an official motto.

Ted knows that he and the team have a long way to go and if they eventually want victory, then they’d better get used to tiny steps rather than giant leaps toward victory. This is plainly spelled out in the season 1 finale where Richmond is relegated after losing in heartbreaking fashion to Manchester City F.C. Despite losing the season, Richmond, Ted, and Rebecca (Hannah Waddingham) are all inspired by the year’s unexpected successes and recommit to one another to rise back up the rankings.

After a full season of Rebecca wanting an explosive victory and Ted trying to give her that, they both accept that Richmond will have to go slow and steady.
