Based on Colin O’Sullivan’s novel,The Dark Manual,Apple TV+‘sSunnyunfolds a compelling mystery drama that seamlessly combines dark comedy with serious themes of grief and loneliness. AlthoughSunny’s episode 3is relatively slower with its plot progression, episode 4 picks up the show’s pace and reveals several new clues and potential red-herring surrounding the central mystery.
While at it, it also features many scenes in which its endearing titular robot character joins forces with the two leads, Mixxy and Suzie, to help unravel the mysteries surrounding Suzie’s missing husband’s past. While Suzie is still far from learning the truth about her husband, episode 4 hints at his connections with the yakuza. Unlike the previous episodes, it also makes Sunny look more reliable.

6Suzie Learns That Masa’s Father Is Not Dead
Masa’s Father Helped Him Out Of Hikikomori
In the show’s present timeline, Suzie attends Masa’s funeral before spotting Hime from a distance. Curious about how the yakuza knew Masa, she decides to talk to her. However, she gets distracted when one of Masa’s co-workers starts talking to her, speaking highly of both Masa and his father. This surprises Suzie becauseshe was told Masa’s father is dead. When she confronts Masa’s mother, Noriko, and asks her to tell the truth about Masa’s father, Noriko keeps her lips sealed. This, for obvious reasons, makes Suzie even more curious, and she sets out to find the truth.
Luckily for Suzie, Mixxy soon arrives for the funeral for free food. Suzie tells her about her newfound learning surrounding Masa’s father, and, after snagging a bottle of alcohol from the funeral, the two set out to get to the bottom of the mystery. Suzie first finds Masa’s koseki, which provides only limited details about his familial ties. Sunny then reveals that she needs another document called a kaiseigen koseki, which would give her more about her husband’s family. To her dismay, however, Sunny also adds that only direct descendants can access the comprehensive document.

5Mixxy & Suzie Break Into A Bath House To Learn More About Masa’s Past
They Learn More About Hime’s Yakuza Connections
Recounting how Masa often visited a bathhouse, Suzie believes she must visit the location to find more clues about her husband’s past. While she and Mixxy break into the bathhouse, Hime keeps a close eye on them and asks one of her men to follow them. While hiding, they overhear the mentalking about the Junk League, Flight 405, and Hime’s odds of becoming the next boss. Moments later, the man Hime hired to track Suzie enters the bathhouse and hears the men talk about his boss. 4Hime’s Yakuza Father Orders Her To Bring Him The Dark Manual
Hime Is Desperate To Inherit Her Father’s Yakuza Empire
TheSunnyepisode also introduces Hime’s father, who seems to be the leader of the central Yakuza clan. Jin has been the Yakuza leader’s right-hand man for years, making him a worthy successor to the Yakuza leader’s empire. However, Hime’s interaction with her father reveals thathe might consider giving her his business and empire if she finds himThe Dark Manual.
The Yakuza leader probably hopes to get access to the code to make the robots carry out all the bad deeds for his crime syndicate.
This hints that Hime is likely tracking Suzie because she hopes she will help her find the manual. 3Sunny Helps Suzie Get Access To Masa’s Kaiseigen Koseki
Sunny Becomes A Useful Ally In The Amateur Investigation
While Suzie and Mixxy hide in the bathhouse, Sunny sets out on her little mission to find Masa’s kaiseigen koseki. Since accessing the kaiseigen koseki would require Noriko’s blessing, Sunny initially claims her programming will not allow her to steal the document. However, Suzie convinces her by reminding her that even though her programming does not “allow” her to lie, she has previously lied to her. With this, Sunny agrees to help and heads to Noriko’s home.
Before looking for the document, Sunny cleverly enters Noriko’s house, claiming that Sunny sent her to help her clean her home. She then gets Noriko drunk to ensure she does not find what she is up to. After Noriko passes out on her couch, Sunny accesses her phone to access the kaiseigen koseki.

It Leads The Trio To An Insurance Company
When Suzie and Mixxy finally reunite with Sunny, she tells them that Shigeru was not Masa’s real father. She also says the document mentionsHiromasa Matsumoto as Masa’s father, who is still alive. After digging deeper into this information, Sunny also learns Masa had issued an insurance policy in Hiromasa Matsumoto’s name. To learn more about this, Suzie, Mixxy, and Sunny visit the insurance company, where a lady tells them the transaction is being investigated and that she is not allowed to talk about “four-circle-five.”
Suzie then recalls that even the yakuza members at the bathhouse had mentioned something about “four-circle-five.
When Suzie struggles to understand what “four-circle-five” means, Sunny explains that it is another way of saying Flight 405.
