During chapter 102 of theSpy X Familymanga,Martha finished retelling her experience as a soldierto the young Becky Blackbell. She explained what happened after she arrived in Berlint City, where her parents welcomed her warmly. While being back home brought her the happiness she had forgotten during her time as an active combatant, she was also confronted with the consequences of her choices. Due to her supposed death while on the battlefield,her beloved Henry Henderson was forced to marry another woman.
Martha realized that the war that she was so enthusiastic about joining only served to bring her pain and separate her from her loved ones. In the end, she had to accept the fact that she and Henry would never be together, and she ended up becoming good friends with Lucia, Henderson’s wife. Still, despite the pain being a soldier brought to her, she also saw the experience as a learning opportunity. She relied upon Becky the truth about the world that her time as a soldier made so evident to her.
According to Martha, one of the main causes of war is the fear humans feel when confronted with a situation they do not fully understand. They fear that the cycle of violence they were once a part of will continue irreparably affecting the lives of the children around them. To prevent another generation from growing up filled with fear and confusion, they are working hard to teach them how to prevent their mistakes.
Characters like Martha and Henderson have talked with the children under their careabout the dangers of propaganda, as they were once victims of it themselves. In chapter 99, it was revealed thatHenry has spent most of his life trying to prevent children from growing up with the same hatred towards Westalisthat most Ostanians have. While she held that same irrational aversion towards their neighboring country as a youngster, Martha is now helping Becky understand that war and violence are not the solution.
