Dreamworks has officially revealed the release date forShrek 5. Picking up where the animatedfranchise left off over a decade ago withShrek Forever Afterin 2010,Shrek 5is the next installmentof the main storyline in the green ogre-led series. In addition to revealing the release date, theShrek 5post confirmed the return of three of the main actors in the series. Said actors are Eddie Murphy (whose return was already known), Mike Myers, and Cameron Diaz. Along with their announcement, DreamWorks posted a brief animated video of a green, ogre-eared “5” trumpeting along to the tune of Smash Mouth’s “All Star,” the quintessential song from the opening credits of the firstShrek.

TheShrek 5release date is somewhat surprising given what Murphy has recently said about the sequel. Last month, the Donkey actor mentioned that he and the other cast members began their work onShrek 5"months ago." He also mentioned that he imagines they will “finish it up” this year, meaning 2024. Murphy also mentionedthathe thoughtShrek 5was"coming out in 2025." The just-announced release date, however, is not until 2026.
The far-away release date is particularly notable becauseShrek 5is not the only film announced in the franchise. Back when he spoke about the sequel’s production timeline, Murphy also mentioned thatthere is a Donkeymovie in the works afterShrek 5.The actor said that production on the spinoffwill not start until after he wraps his work onShrek 5, meaning that it will come even later than the main franchise film.
