Samsung Galaxy A54 vs. Galaxy A53: Should You Upgrade?

The Galaxy A54 is Samsung’s latest mid-range phone of 2023. Since the company is not making a bigger A74 variant, the A54 is the best that the A-series has to offer right now.

Unlike the Galaxy A53, Samsung doesn’t seem to be marketing the A54 as much which is why you might not have heard any buzz surrounding it. Regardless, let’s compare the Galaxy A54 with its predecessor and see if the improvements are really worth the upgrade.

Perhaps the biggest difference between the A54 and A53 is the former’s new design which heavily resembles the flagship Galaxy S23 series. With rounded corners and individual camera lenses sticking out the back, the new design is one of thebest features of the Galaxy A54.

Compared to the A53, the new model is shorter, wider, slightly heavier, and almost identical in thickness. Both devices have an IP67 rating for water and dust resistance. However, note that this resistance is “not permanent and may diminish over time,” according to Samsung.

The Galaxy A53 is available in four colors: Black, White, Blue, and Peach. The newer Galaxy A54 is available in four colors as well: Lime, Graphite, Violet, and White. Lime is actually one of the exclusivecolorways in the Galaxy S23 series, so it’s nice to see it on an A-series phone.

Strangely enough, Samsung hasn’t specified the type of glass protection used on the A54, but since its predecessor had Gorilla Glass 5, we assume that’s present here too.

The only significant difference between the Galaxy A54 and A53 is that the former has a new 50MP main camera that is expected to improve the low-light performance of the handset.

While the resolution on the new phone is lower, you might know that thenumber of megapixels doesn’t really matteras much as image processing does. If you want to be absolutely sure that the Galaxy A54 takes better photos and videos, it’s wise to watch reviews and camera comparisons.

Samsung has also gotten rid of the 5MP depth camera which is a good thing because the lens served no real purpose other than marketing the “quad-camera setup.” Removing it means that Samsung can use those savings to improve the quality of the existing cameras via better hardware and better image algorithms.

The 6.4-inch Galaxy A54 sadly has bigger bezels than its predecessor, as is evident by its worse screen-to-body ratio. Samsung seems to have thickened the side bezels in order to achieve a uniform bezel look.

Aside from that, the only other difference is that the A54 has a slightly brighter display at 1000 nits instead of its predecessor’s 800 nits panel, so it should be more viewable outdoors.

The Galaxy A54 is powered by the new Exynos 1380 chip which is noticeably more powerful than the Exynos 1280 chip on the Galaxy A53. In fact, the former clocks an overall AnTuTu (v9) score of more than 500K whereas the latter could only go as far as 379,313—indicating a near 30% improvement in performance.

So, you can expect a decent improvement in gaming performance and rendering speeds. But don’t expect the same for efficiency since both chips are made using a 5nm architecture. Because of this, battery life will likely be quite comparable on both devices.

Keep Your Galaxy A53 for Now

The Galaxy A54 does indeed look amazing, but it doesn’t offer a big enough improvement over its predecessor to warrant an upgrade so soon. Many of the basic features are the same, and both devices run the same One UI 5.1 software with Android 13. If you own the Galaxy A53 already, keep it. There’s no need to upgrade just yet.

However, if you own an older model, you should definitely consider the Galaxy A54 for its better camera, faster chip, and premium S23-like design.
