Samsung Galaxy A54 vs. Galaxy A34: What’s the Difference?

The Galaxy A54 and A34 are Samsung’s latest mid-range phones for 2023 with the former being the more expensive. If you’re looking to upgrade to a new Android phone and would rather not spend flagship money, the two devices are great contenders.

But do the Galaxy A54’s features justify its higher price tag, or should you just get the cheaper A34 instead? Let’s check out the key differences between the two.

The Galaxy A54 is shorter, narrower, and ever-so-slightly heavier than the Galaxy A34. Both devices have an IP67 rating just like their predecessors, theGalaxy A53 and A33. The Galaxy A54 and A34 are available in four color options: Lime, Graphite, and Violet for both devices, plus White on the A54, and Silver on the A34.

Interestingly, Lime is one of the exclusivecolorways in the Galaxy S23 series. Note that the Lime, Violet, and Silver options on the A34 have a color gradient for added flair, whereas the ones on the A54 are flatter and less saturated.

Samsung hasn’t specified the type of glass protection used on the devices, but since the predecessors had Gorilla Glass 5, we assume the same is present here too.

Both the Galaxy A54 and A34 have gotten rid of the (frankly useless) depth cameras that their predecessors have. The Galaxy A34 has exactly the same camera specs as the A33, and only the Galaxy A54 has received a new 50MP main camera.

However, do note that it’s not yet known whether the 50MP lens on the A54 is the same as the 50MP lens on the flagship Galaxy S23, so it’s probably wiser not to get your hopes up too high. The Galaxy A54 also has a better 32MP selfie camera for high-res selfies. The common improvement between the two devices is enhanced low-light photography.

Surprisingly, the cheaper Galaxy A34 has a bigger 6.6-inch display than the Galaxy A54 which comes with a 6.4-inch display. The Galaxy A34 has much more symmetrical bezels than its predecessor with a greatly reduced bottom chin. Sadly, the Galaxy A54 has thicker side bezels than last time in an attempt to achieve uniform bezels.

Still, the Galaxy A54 looks better because of its hole-punch display whereas the Galaxy A34 is still rocking an outdated teardrop-style notch. However, the A34 does support a 120Hz refresh rate now, as compared to 90Hz on its predecessor. Samsung hasn’t revealed the peak brightness specs, but it’s promising brighter display panels on both devices.

Samsung hasn’t officially stated which chips power the Galaxy A54 and A34, but several reports state it’s a new 5nm Exynos 1380 chip on the former and a 6nm Mediatek Dimensity 1080 chip on the latter.

Both chips clock an AnTuTu (v9) score of more than 500K, posting a 30% improvement over the Exynos 1280 chip inside the A53 and A33. However, the Galaxy A54 will inevitably be more efficient due to its more advanced 5nm architecture. That means you shouldget better battery life, at least slightly.

The Galaxy A54 and A34 Are Very Similar

The Galaxy A54 and A34 are more similar than they are different. Both have the same battery capacity, charging speed, RAM, storage, software features, and Knox security.

With the A54, you’re getting a slightly better camera system and slightly more efficient chip, but now that the Galaxy A34 has a bigger screen and 120Hz refresh rate, nothing about it feels lacking anymore.

If you’re tight on budget, the A34 is an excellent option provided that you’re okay with the notch. If you’re okay with spending a bit more, the Galaxy A54 looks more modern.
