Summary

For quite some time, rumors of thePlayStation 5 Prohave circulated, withdetailed technical specificationssuggesting that it would be coming soon, potentially this year. However, this may not be the case, as new reports suggest that its release date may have been delayed and won’t be launching in 2024. While this will likely come as a disappointment to those who have held off purchasing the current versions of the console or were looking forward to upgrading, it would make sense considering the wider gaming space for PlayStation.

Insider Gaming’s Tom Henderson, who has a solid track record with Sony hardware leaks, previously being the first to reveal the remote-play-based PlayStation Portal handheld, had previously mentioned the upgraded console but, alongside many other leakers, has been quiet about its state in recent months. When discussing the upcoming Gamescom event on X,Hendersonwas discussing the kind of news coming out of the event with videotechuk and suggested thatthe PS5 Pro may not be launching in 2024.

There’s Not Anything Major Coming Up In 2024 To Really Push A PS5 Pro’s Sales

The PS4 Pro Released Alongside A Solid Line Up Of PlayStation Exclusives

Looking back at the release of the PS4 Pro in November 2016, there were several major PlayStation exclusiveseither launching or on the horizon - pun fully intended, asHorizon Zero Dawnlaunched mere months after in February 2017 - that could really push players to purchase the upgraded hardware. 2016 to 2018 were very good years for gaming in general, but the PlayStation 4 had many exclusives to give it the edge, withUncharted 4: A Thief’s Endhaving already launching in 2016, the aforementionedHorizon Zero Dawnin 2017, andMarvel’s Spider-ManandGod of Warin 2018.

It also coincided with the launch of PlayStation VR, with one of the major selling points being that those who bought the headset and the newer console would have a smoother experience. This made it the perfect time for Sony to release its PS4 upgrade. Unfortunately, while this year has seen the likes ofFinal Fantasy VII Rebirth,Helldivers 2, andRise of the Ronin, unless Sony has some major surprise reveals at Gamescom, the only real exclusive title that is set totake full advantage of the new hardwarethis year would be the upcomingAstro Bot, which launches in September 2024, and while it may look fun, that may not be enough to fully push its sales as much as the PS4 Pro’s launch.

It’s possible that with many high-profile titles coming out next year, Sony might push back its hardware release to capitalize on them. 2025 sees high profile, graphics-heavy multiplatform titles such asGTA 6andMarvel 1943: Rise of Hydra, and its exclusiveDeath Stranding 2, which would certainly make for better companions to thePlayStation 5 Pro’s launch, but still have relatively vague release windows. Time will tell, however, as there’s still a chance that there could be some surprises in store at Gamescom, which is just over a month away.
