Summary

Patton Oswalt has confirmed the incredible inspiration behind Boba Fett’s return in the TV seriesThe Book of Boba Fett, revealing it was an homage to one of his roles. One of the most iconic scenes from the Disney+ series shows Fett climbing out of the Sarlacc Pit, having survived his fall as seen inReturn of the Jedi. The moment starts with him raising an arm out of the sand, moving it around before finally pulling himself up. This moment leads him to his operations on Tatooine alongside the rest ofThe Book of Boba Fett’s cast.

However, speaking onJimmy Kimmel Live!(viastarwars_siths), Oswalt revealedFett’s return inThe Book of Boba Fettwas actually inspired by his filibuster in a scene fromParks and Recreation.

In the clip, the actor explains how John Favreau told him the scene of Fett’s arm rising from the sand was perfectly matched up with his appearance on the comedy. Check out what Oswalt had to say below:

When The Book of Boba Fett came on, Disney Channel, and Jon Favreau confirmed this for me, they cut the opening shot to match my filibuster [in Parks and Recreation]. Of the hand, you can sync them up time-wise. The hand comes up, hits the [sand], down from the twin suns. The hand comes out of the sand, you can match it up to my filibuster. They did that on purpose.

Patton Oswalt’s Parks & Rec Scene Has Become Star Wars Canon

Oswalt’sParks and Recreationscene inspiring the opening ofThe Book of Boba Fettis an unpredictable connection, but one that makes sense when looking at both clips. While subtle, the way the actor moves his hand in the comedy is much the same as how Fett pulls himself out of the Sarlacc Pit in the opening scene of the show. This effectively makes the actor’s filibuster canon to theStar Warsfranchise, having served as a parallel to the famed bounty hunter’s return.

Although there have been someBoba Fett retconssince his return to Disney’s version of the franchise, references to other media show how inspired the character’s titular series was. AlthoughThe Book of Boba Fettreceived lukewarm reception upon release, small details like inspiration from Oswalt show how much effort was put into the series, regardless of criticism. It also opens the door for future projects to reference a whole host of other shows and movies, even in subtle ways like the opening of Fett’s show did.

Such potential could even carry over into an unconfirmedThe Book of Boba Fettseason 2, should more of his story be necessary to fleshing out the Mandoverse. If that is the case, then there could be even more references toParks and Recreation, or even Oswalt’s work in general, in future Fett appearances. This could also be applied toStar Warsprojects overall, which could become more direct about what inspired them for even the smallest parts of its most important scenes.
