Its debut season appeared in Nielsen’s top 10 original streaming series for five weeks, and as of the most recently available data on June 2, its second season has been on the chart for three weeks. Furthermore, according to Reelgood’s rankings,Outer Rangewas the sixth most popular TV show on streaming for the last week in May, around the time its second season was released.
In addition to performing reasonably well for the streamer,Outer Rangeregularly received positive reviews from critics, with particular praise for Brolin and Poots' performances. Premiered in 2022, season 1 was also praised for its unconventional Western sci-fi premise, but criticized for its numerous subplots which risked overwhelming the narrative. Despite its flaws, season 1 was widely recognized for its ambitious approach and memorable performances, resulting in a 79% score on Rotten Tomatoes. It was renewed for a second season shortly after with Charles Murray taking over for Zev Borow as showrunner.
