Fans were reminded of Boruto’s old ability in the exchange between the self-aware God Tree Hidari and Boruto on the final page ofBoruto: Two Blue VortexChapter #11. Boruto’s swift action in releasing Sarada surprises Hidari, causing him to refer to his enemy as Otsutsuki Boruto.
Some fans have chalked Hidari’s choice of names to his current lack of understanding of his new surroundings as a sentient being, but, in this case, his instincts are accurate. While Boruto’s legal surname might be Uzumaki, he has long since become an Otsutsuki genetically. And with Otsutsuki genes come great abilities.

Boruto’s transformation into an Otsutsukibegan shortly after he defeated Momoshiki Otsutsuki inBoruto: Naruto Next GenerationsChapter #10. Just before dying, Momoshiki inscribed Boruto’s palm with a Karma. The Karma is, in essence, the Otsutsuki Clan’s “escape death” card. It allowsOtsutsuki Clan membersto implant their genetic code into another person. Once implanted, it allows a defeated Otsutsuki to eventually possess the person inscribed with the Karma, so long as they are a suitable host.
Accordingly, Momoshiki resurrected a bit of himself in Boruto andslowly began taking control of his body at the genetic level. Despite living inside the young Uzumaki, Boruto exhibited an uncanny ability to resist Momoshiki’s attempts to take over. However, their conflicting natures are largely reconciled when Boruto and Kawaki attempt to kill Momoshiki inBoruto: Naruto Next GenerationsChapter #66.
There, Boruto let Kawaki strike him with a deadly blow. Realizing that he’d have no way to resurrect himself with Boruto dead, in Chapter #67, Momoshiki sacrifices his remaining genetic data on the Kama to completely reconstruct Boruto’s obliterated internal organs.

Momoshiki’s move saved Boruto’s life. However, since he was not able to complete his full genetic download into Boruto, he couldn’t fully integrate with Boruto’s DNA. So, whileBoruto may be no different from an Otsutsuki clan member genetically, he was not only able to keep his consciousness but also wield a significantly greater ability to control his Momoshiki alter-ego.

As a result, he effortlessly transforms Boruto’s powerful Rasengan into a bullet-like Rasendan that breaks Code’s hold of Kawaki without injuring him.
More drastically, inBoruto: Naruto Next GenerationsChapters 53-54, Momoshiki takes over Boruto and fights Sasuke and Kawaki simultaneously. Not only is he able todestroy Sasuke’s powerful Rinneganbut nearly gets the upper hand, if not for Boruto’s interference in the process. That is to say, the combination of Boruto and Momoshiki creates a super-powered shinobi without a ceiling on what they can accomplish.

Outside the power boosts that Momoshiki offers Boruto, perhaps the most important support he can provide is his intelligence and experience. While Momoshiki was not a top-level leader of the Otsutsuki Clan, he had enough seniority in the family to lead the mission to find out what happened to Isshiki and Kaguya’. Accordingly, he has been alive for centuries and has all the experiences of his predecessors ingrained in his DNA.
Luckily for Boruto,Momoshiki is never tired of giving his counsel. He commonly offers his opinion even when Boruto is not interested in his advice. He also stated that he will continue giving advice since he has an interest in making sure Boruto lives a long and fruitful life. Boruto would be wise to tap into his significant battlefield experience.
What this means forTwo Blue Vortexis that Boruto has access to a whole set of powers that he is too afraid to display, as the series has teased that it would allow Momoshiki to take over his body again.
