Summary

Fallout 4’s Wasteland is home to many memorable locations, from its vaults to the massive ship, The USS Constitution sitting atop a building near Bunker Hill. While some of these locations, such as the aforementioned USS Constitution, are featured for a standalone questline, others, such as the cul-de-sac, Sanctuary Hills, can be turned into a new home for players and some of their allies, called settlements.

Settlements can be built to a players' own designs, using materials scavenged across the Wasteland to design new houses or facilities such as water pumps, and wild plants can be harvested to ensure a steady supply of food and drink for the location’s inhabitants. It’s a nice change of pace from the brutality of the Wasteland, and can be extremely satisfying to see an area that was once decimated by nuclear fallout become thriving once again.

With 37 settlements to unlock and build in Fallout 4 knowing where to put in effort can be hard, and some locations are definitely better than others.

One Player Found One Of Fallout 4’s Best Settlement Locations After Many Hours Of Playing

A Private Island Can Become One Of Fallout 4’s Best Settlements

While some of these locations are extremely easy to find, such as Sanctuary Hills, which is one of the first locations players explore in the game and serves as the tutorial for settlement building, others can be found after venturing slightly more off the beaten path inFallout 4. This was the case with RedditorMore_Commission5368, who found one ofFallout 4’s best settlement locations after nearly reaching level 50, completing the whole game and sending all of their companions to Sanctuary.

The location in question was found out of sheer curiosity, as More_Commission5368 simply wanted to see if they couldaccess the island to the south-east corner of the game’s map. Upon arriving there, however, they found that not only was it a named location, but it was one that could be transformed into a private island base after clearing out some of the mutated creatures, Mirelurks, that originally inhabited it.

And Already Comes With A Mansion

The location in question goes by the name of Spectacle Island, and according to the in-game lore, was once owned by an eccentric billionaire.Spectacle Island already has a mansion pre-built on the northwest shore, along with other, more run-down buildings such as shacks and ruined houses that can be scrapped for resources and refurbished.

Spectacle Island can only be reached by swimming or bywalking across the seabed in power armor.

Spectacle Island has at least one specimen of all the wild strains of common plants; corn, tato, razorgrain, gourd, wild mutfruit, melon, and tarberry, making it extremely easy to farm and make for a more self-sustaining settlement, despite the location being removed from the mainland. It also has plenty more resources that can be acquired across its land, with wood being the most common.

A bobblehead can also be found in an open locker on the partially sunken green boat to the south of Spectacle Island. This will increase the character’s Luck stat by 1.

How To Unlock Spectacle Island As A Settlement

Players Must Activate The Island’s Radio Tower And Fend Off Mirelurks

While More_Commission5368 noted that Spectacle Island can be built upon after “dealing with some pests”, there’s a bit more to the situation than that, as players must first venture to the center of the island and up the hill there. Here, they will find a metal shack with the island’s radio tower, which, unsurprisingly, isn’t working. From here, players must then go to the partially submerged boat to the south - where the aforementioned Luck bobblehead could be found - and flip the switch on the circuit breaker.

Once this is activated, a mirelurk queen and several other leveled mirelurks will emerge, and players must fight them off while heading back to the radio tower. Here, they must flip the corresponding circuit breaker for the tower, which will emit a sonic pulse that will drive all remaining mirelurks to the shores of the island. Once this is done, the workshop will unlock, enabling players to build at any point on the island and create their settlement.

It is not necessary to kill the queen, as she is affected by the radio tower’s sonic pulse as well.

Some Players Have Got Creative With Their Use Of Spectacle Island

Transforming It Into A Luxury Beach Resorts Or A Mutant Zoo Akin To Jurassic Park

While Spectacle Island offers plenty of land to build new homes and facilities, and could house many survivors, some players have opted to get slightly more creative with the location.RedditWidowcommented on More_Commission5368’s post to state that they built a castle, a Wild West town and a party house there. They had also heard of peopleturning it into aJurassic Parkor anIsland of Doctor Moreau-type island by using the cages found in theWasteland WorkshopDLC add-on to capture various creatures, transforming it into a mutant zoo or a place to experiment on the different kinds of creatures present.

Others such asRabidBadgerFarts, turned the island into a beach resort that was probably more in line with its original owner’s vision. To do this, they used the settlement builder’s raised wooden floors tobuild a long pier out into the sea with seats, lights and a bar at the end, before sending some of the game’s more attractive settlers there and using theArmored Underwearmod to give them all brightly colored bikinis and swimwear.

With the amount of land available on Spectacle Island, there are plenty of possibilities for those who wish to get creative with their settlements. While some ofFallout 4’s settlements are clearly intended to fit a certain aesthetic, Spectacle Island is pretty much a blank slate, letting players run wild with their imaginations to transform it into a slice of paradise hidden away in the bleak, post-apocalyptic Wasteland, or a twisted offshore facility that survivors may want to steer clear of.
