Every social media app is different, but there seems to be one constant, and that’s the necessity of a block function. Originally popularized by gamers, social platform Discord has not only recognized this need but done us one better, with its more discrete “ignore” button.

Discord Has Added an “Ignore” Feature for Silencing Unwanted Chats

As part of its internet safety initiative, Discord has introduced a new feature calledIgnore. InDiscord’s blog, the company positions Ignore as a useful function within your “safety toolbox,” allowing you to “manage your social boundaries in a gentler way.”

To be clear, Discord does also have aBlockbutton. However, the Ignore button is less confrontational, giving you a more discrete way to cut off communication with someone.

When you block someone on Discord, that person knows they’ve been blocked because their attempted messages will not go through. Here’s Discord’s explanation of why blocking isn’t always the preferred option:

“Currently, you can block a user to prevent interactions with them, but we’ve heard from our users that this can sometimes feel confrontational and scary.”

When you ignore someone on Discord, the platform will not notify that person. Discord will just hide the following content from you:

Essentially, ignoring a Discord profile won’t stop that user from seeing your profile and sending you messages—you just won’t be bothered by them.

How to Ignore Someone on Discord

The steps to ignore a user on Discord are very similar to how you would block a profile. Here are the steps:
