Summary
Criminal Minds: Evolutionis hinting at a big change for one of the show’s most controversial characters in the upcoming season 3.TheCriminal Minds: Evolutionseason 2 finalefeatured multiple cliffhangers, some which viewers can look forward to, and one that could make a major storyline complaint even worse. WhenCriminal Mindswas canceledand revived asCriminal Minds: Evolutionnot long after, new characters were introduced while familiar ones like Spencer Reid didn’t make the jump over. Though some of these new additions were positive, one character has received great criticism from viewers.
Most storylines inCriminal Mindsfocus on cases, but the character’s personal stories are sometimes as important, or occasionally even more important than the cases. Not all of them have gone over well with viewers, such asJJ and Reid’s randomCriminal Mindsromancethat was dropped almost as soon as it started. ThoughCriminal Minds: Evolutionhas had some of the most compelling serial killer stories, with “Sicarius” and then “Gold Star,” others have fallen flat. Unfortunately, withCriminal Minds: Evolutionseason 3in development, one of those poor storylines is going to get even more attention.

Criminal Minds: Evolution Confirms A Derek & Penelope Detail I’ve Been Wondering For Years
Derek Morgan and Penelope Garcia have one of the best friendships in Criminal Minds, and I’ve been waiting for it to return in Evolution for years.
Criminal Minds: Evolution’s Season 2 Finale Hints At Tyler Joining The BAU Team
The Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 2 Finale Revealed Tyler Applied To The FBI
At the end ofCriminal Minds: Evolutionseason 2, a conversation between Penelope and Tyler revealed he had applied to be an FBI agent. She implied that he will likely get the job, which could make him a permanent part of the BAU team as a profiler. The controversial Tyler is coming back forCriminal Minds: Evolutionseason 3, and the season 2 finale has teased it might be in an even bigger role. Along with Elias Voit,Tyler became a main character inCriminal Minds: Evolutionseason 2after having played a supporting role in season 1.
Tyler has appeared in every episode since he was first introduced inCriminal Minds: Evolutionseason 3 as a potential suspect connected to “Sicarius.” Though Tyler has since gained the trust of the BAU team and has worked with them, his romance with Penelope and his tendency to go against orders have made him controversial. His military intelligence background has helped the team on cases, but he often has to resort to criminal behavior to do this. Tyler’s character has improved fromCriminal Minds: Evolutionseason 1 to season 2, but that doesn’t mean he should become a profiler.

5 Things Criminal Minds Got Wrong About Criminal Profiling (& 5 It Got Right)
A lot of Criminal Minds fans ask ‘what does unsub mean?’ and ‘is it used in the show accurately?’ Here’s how accurate the series is about profiling.
How Tyler Being An Official Profiler Would Change His Role At The BAU
Tyler Was A Consultant For The BAU In Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 2
If Tyler were to be promoted to profiler inCriminal Minds: Evolutionseason 3, it would mark a pretty big change in his role at the BAU. InCriminal Minds: Evolutionseason 2, Tyler became an official consultant of the BAU, but he wasn’t an FBI agent. This meant he faced certain restrictions, typically when it came to going into the field. So, while he was always around Quantico, he didn’t have as big of a role or responsibility as the BAU team’s profilers. It also put Tyler in a more subordinate role.
The last timeCriminal Mindsintroduced a new profiler to the BAU team was in season 13 with Matt Simmons, who was already an FBI Supervisory Special Agent.

If Tyler were to be made a profiler, he’d become an FBI agent and a major part of the team. This would put him in the field with everyone else, giving him more contact with the unsubs and the other profilers. As aforementioned, Tyler does have knowledge and assets that are useful to the team, he hasn’t necessarily earned the profiler title. In comparison, it took JJ seven seasons ofCriminal Mindsbefore she was promoted. There’s also the question of whether he could be trusted with fieldwork, as his past has proven he’s ill-tempered and impulsive.
Tyler’s Return Means Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 3 Will Likely Revive His Divisive Garcia Storyline
Tyler & Penelope’s Romantic Storyline Doesn’t Seem To Be Over
When Tyler and Penelope spoke at the end ofCriminal Minds: Evolutionseason 2, he confessed he wasn’t sure what he’d do about them working together. Penelope told him they were okay but she appreciated him not being sure. The conversation made it seem as though Tyler wasn’t completely over Penelope, and even though she’s claimed to have moved on, past episodes have suggested she hasn’t either. InCriminal Minds: Evolutionseason 2, episode 6, Penelope was extremely jealous of Tyler’s ex-girlfriend, Theresa. The episode also confirmed that Luke wasn’t over Penelope either.
I Am So Over Tyler, Garcia & Alvez’s Drama, Please Make It Stop Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 2
Halfway past Criminal Minds: Evolution season 2, Tyler Green, Penelope Garcia, & Luke Alvez’s love triangle has grown stale and must end.
Penelope dating Tyler against Emily’s orders as BAU Unit Chief, but turning down Luke was hypocritcal and made no sense. This would become even worse if Tyler were to become an official profiler inCriminal Minds: Evolutionseason 3. The love triangle between Tyler, Luke, and Penelope has been too drawn out, and it’s dragging all their characters down. Tyler becoming a profiler may not be a bad move if it means finally putting an end to Tyler and Penelope’s romantic storyline, butCriminal Minds: Evolutionseason 3 doesn’t seem to be going in that direction.
