Warning: Contains SPOILERS for Avengers: Assemble #5!Mephistois a villainMCUfans have been dying to see make his way into the established universe, and withCaptain America: Brave New Worldcoming up, there’s yet another chance for Marvel Studios to finally do it. While many might think that a Captain America movie would be the last place Mephisto would appear (especially after neglecting to appear in projects likeWandaVisionandAgatha All Along), one upcoming comic provesCaptain America: Brave New Worldactually has the perfect way to bring Mephisto into the MCU.

In a preview forAvengers: Assemble#5 by Steve Orlando and José Luís, the Avengers Emergency Response Squad (aka, the AVENG.E.R.S.) are fighting the Serpent Society, who - in the previous issue - used a new weapon they developed to transformSteve Rogers’ Captain America into a snake-like mutant creature.

With a vicious, mutated Captain America on their side, the Serpent Society members are more confident than ever that they can take down this Avengers squad. However, the fact that Captain America is now on their side isn’t the only reason the Serpent Society feels bold enough to take on Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. The reason for that lies entirely with the Serpent Society’s new master, the Great Red Serpent aka Mephisto.

Marvel Comics’ Serpent Society Now Serve Mephisto aka the Great Red Serpent

The Serpent Society is Making its MCU Debut inCaptain America: Brave New World

Mephisto has many followers around the world, and the Serpent Society has become the latest organization to worship the King of Hell. Initially, this might seem kind of random, since the Serpent Society has never really been a group that has explored the supernatural. However, because of Mephisto’s new codename, it makes perfect sense that the Serpent Society follows him.Mephisto is basically Marvel’s ‘Satan’, who is often depicted as a serpent in religious texts and artwork. Now, the same is true for Mephisto in Marvel Comics, so the fact that the Serpent Society now follows him actually tracks.

What’s even cooler about this development is that the Serpent Society is about to make its MCU debut inCaptain America: Brave New World. Perhaps the MCU’s version of the Serpent Society also worships the Great Red Serpent, and every act of villainy they commit in the movie is to further the interests of Mephisto. While it seems unlikely that Mephisto will actually appear in Captain America: Brave New World, even if the Serpent Society does worship him (though not impossible), that would at least open the door for the King of Hell to finally appear in the MCU.

Mephisto has Made the Serpent Society More Interesting than It’s Ever Been Before

The Serpent Society has Always Been a Pretty Bland Super-Villain Team, Until Now

It’s no secret that the Serpent Society isn’t one of the most popularsuper-villain groups in Marvel Comics, as their over-the-top ‘snake’ aesthetic makes them seem goofy and totally unserious when compared to teams like the Sinister Six or the Brotherhood of Mutants. However, now that it is a Mephisto-worshiping organization, the Serpent Society is more interesting than it has ever been. Does this mean the Serpent Society will get demonic upgrades? Will they become strong enough to challenge the likes of Ghost Rider? Right now, it’s too early to tell, but it’s an exciting prospect nonetheless.
