In 2007, Hamill voiced The Moth for the first time. The Moth has since become a recurring character and is one of the arch-nemeses of Mermaid Man. In portraying the Flying Dutchman, Hamill is taking the step up from being a minor antagonist in the world of Bikini Bottom to the primary villain of a theatrical movie, 18 years after portraying aSpongeBobvillain for the first time.

Why Mark Hamill Voicing The Flying Dutchman Is More Exciting Than His Past SpongeBob Role

The Flying Dutchman Will Undoubtedly Be A Big Role For Hamill

More so than The Moth, the Flying Dutchman is an incredibly exciting role for Hamill to be playing. For one,the Dutchman is a much bigger character than The Moth in the world ofSpongeBob. This will allow Hamill to further push the boundaries of his voice-acting, portraying the larger-than-life personality of the ghostly ship captain in a way that The Moth never allowed for.

Similarly, the Flying Dutchman will appear in a movie rather than being confined to a TV show like The Moth. This will, again, allow Hamill to depict a greater range of voice work as there will be more of a cinematic script and feel to the film. Similarly, Hamill’s previous villainous voice roles, like the Joker and Fire Lord Ozai, have been particularly menacing. While The Moth is an enjoyably silly role for Hamill, his role as one of the primary villains - the nefarious Flying Dutchman - in the next theatricalSpongeBob SquarePantsmovie raises a lot more to be excited for.
