Summary
The King of Curses, RyomenSukuna, has proven every bit the match forJujutsu Kaisen’s sorcerer elite. Having overcome everything Gojo, Yuji, Yuta, and even Yuta-Gojo have sent against him, the question of the conflict has changed from whether he’ll succeed to how many will remain alive when he ushers in the “New Age of Sorcery”. However, all hope is not lost, as the series reintroduced a potent weaponagainst Sukuna’s abilitiesthat may just turn the tide in the Jujutsu sorcery community’s favor.
Yuta-Gojo’s sudden incapacitation inJujutsu KaisenChapter #263 caused Yuji and Todo to rejoin the battle in earnest. However, while they’ve found some success in punishing Sukuna, their efforts have not been decisive. That has given Sukuna chance after chance to heal and refresh his cursed energy and pick off weakened opponents.
However, with Angel/Kurusu now dropping into the battle, the vibe of the fight changes completely. Since the Culling Game, Angel’s goal has been to exterminate Sukuna. At the same time,Kurusu’s goal has been to save Megumi. Together they have the power to extinguish Sukuna or, at the very least, cancel his possession of Megumi’s body, which would result in Sukuna’s defeat.
Nothing Can Escape the Curse Nullification Power of Angel/Kurusu
This is not the first time that the reincarnated sorcerer of the Heian era, Angel, and Sukuna met in battle. InJujutsu KaisenChapter #213, Angel joined the fray soon after Sukuna had taken possession of Megumi. Employing her innate technique – Jacob’s Ladder – the pair came within moments of sending Sukuna to the afterlife. However, Sukuna – ever the master tactician –pretended to be Megumi and appealed to Kurusu’s love for him.
As the Angel shares Hana Kurusu’s body, believing their efforts had rescued Megumi, Kurusu deactivated Jacob’s Ladder. That momentary lapse of attention was just enough for Sukuna to land a crushing strike and end Angel’s ability to wield Jacob’s Ladder. Thus, Angel was never factored in the final showdown against Sukuna in Shinjuku, or at least that’s what the King of Curses believed.
In fact, the Angel’s cursed technique has always been the most potent weapon at the sorcerers' disposal. Technique Extinguishment nullifies any and all cursed techniques, including barriers and cursed objects. Reincarnated sorcerers, such as Sukuna, are considered cursed objects. The Angel delivers her cursed technique through an extension technique calledMaximum Output: Jacob’s Ladder, which obliterates every technique and cursed object, including Sukuna’s possession of Megumi, in its path.
The Return of Angel and Kurusu Marks a Critical Juncture in the Battle
Sukuna’s Chances of Survival Just Dropped Significantly
Importantly, Angel/Kurusu’s technique only targets cursed objects. Sorcerers bathed in its light of destruction are not affected by its damage radius (even though their cursed techniques are canceled). This means that even if Sukuna survives Jacob’s Ladder, Yuji, and perhaps Mai, whose attacks are mainly physical, could take advantage and strike at the King of Curses.
What this all means is that Sukuna is in a pretty pickle.The Angel presents an immediate existential threatthat he’s not faced since his duel with the true Gojo. Kurusu is unlikely to be swayed again from their purpose by the same trick. Sukuna is also under attack by Yuji who is trying touse Sukuna’s own Cleave to finally convince Megumi to wake upfrom his guilt-driven slumber and fight back.
While Sukuna has been able to overcome every strategy the sorcerers used against him, he’s finally in dire straits thanks to the opportunity created by Yuta’s sacrifice. The next chapter ofJujutsu Kaisenwill reveal if the Angel will finally be able to obliterateSukuna, or if she will become another victim on the King of Curses' altar.
