Summary
With three acclaimed seasons under its belt,Evilis coming to a close with season 4, and Andrea Martin has very mixed feelings about it. The Paramount+ horror-drama has centered on forensic psychologist Dr. Kristen Bouchard, Catholic priest David Acosta and technology contractor Ben Shakir as they are tasked by the Catholic Church with investigating supposed paranormal activities, all while conflicting with rising demonic forces in New York City. Shortly after setting apremiere date forEvilseason 4, it was confirmed that the show would be ending with the new season, setting up an apocalyptic final season.
During a recent interview withScreen Rantto discuss the remaining episodes of the show, Andrea Martin was asked her thoughts aboutEvil’s surprise cancellation. The star was quite passionate about her feelings of the show coming to an end after four seasons, acknowledging having mixed feelings of gratitude and sadness, while also feeling disappointed in the lack of Emmys consideration for the hit show. See what Martin shared below:

It’s mixed. I feel disappointed that I won’t be able to carry on in a show that I think is such high quality, high artistry, really. And examines really important subject matter, science and faith and psychology. It’s got everything in it. I’m also grateful that I had an opportunity to work for three years, I think, on the series, and get to meet those wonderful actors. So it’s a mixed bag. I wish we had more to do. I mean, that’s the bottom line. But unless some miracle happens, I think that’s it.
But I think what you’re going to see this season is magnificent. I know for my character, the arc they wrote has beautiful scenes, unexpected, and I loved playing them. I had more to do, actually, in the last season than I’ve had in previous seasons, and especially the last four, so I feel really grateful. Let me just say this to you. I hadn’t seen a lot of the writers on the set, they’re kind of sequestered in writing. And we don’t do table reads for the writers. But I did meet a couple of the writers at the closing party, and I walked up to them and with the deepest sincerity — and I mean this, I’ve been working a lot in my life.
I shook their hands, and I said, “You are extraordinary writers, what you’re able to achieve and what you can give an actor, I’ll never forget it.” I don’t know, to be able to do what they do, include psychology, science, faith, religion, all these different stories, make them tie together. I don’t think people understand the skill that it takes. I cannot believe that the Emmy Awards did not acknowledge Evil, the writers, the direction, the actors. I think the show’s doing something different than anything else on TV. So that’s how I feel.
Evil Really Is Ending At An Inopportune Time
The show is finding success beyond Paramount+.
Martin isn’t the onlyEvilcast memberfeeling a little disappointed with the show’s abrupt ending, as star Katja Herbers has been very vocal in her hopes to see the show continue on another platform. Kurt Fuller also recently shared his feelings aboutEvilseason 4 being the final season withScreen Rant, expressing a similar sense of mixed emotions as Martin as he is grateful to have had the opportunity to play Dr. Boggs, while also acknowledging “there’s nothing tougher” than leaving a character behind. See what Fuller previously said below:
Well, there’s nothing tougher than a show you love ending, number one. All actors want security, because, I mean, if you look at my IMDB page, you see I’ve done a lot of things, which is a lot of endings. And this one, it was so good. The acting and writing and the people involved were on such a high level, and we were all so close. The show is kicking so much a– right now, it’s just killing it, and I think this is the best season of the show, season 4. So, for all those reasons, it really hurts, to be honest. It really hurts, but I’m trying to be an adult.
Beyond the cast’s feelings of the decision, the move to cancelEvilmay also come as something of a surprise given its track record of success. Following the first two seasons' already impressive 92% and 95% approval ratings from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, seasons 3 and 4 have both landed perfect 100% scores, a rare feat for any TV show. The fact that the show has also survived the leap from CBS to the newly branded Paramount+ also seemed to indicate the studio’s faith in its longevity.
The other major reason whyEvil’s cancellation comes as something of a disappointment is that the show is now finding success beyond its Paramount+ home. After briefly being available on the streamer before season 2, the show returned to Netflix ahead of its season 4 premiere, where it went on to draw solid viewership. Should it continue to situate itself on Netflix’s Top 10, it will be interesting to see if thecreative team behindEvilpartner with the streamer to keep the show alive.
