While Elgato’s device is called the “Stream” Deck, far more than just creators can benefit from it. I use my Stream Deck every day for productivity, and it’s the one device I can’t work without.
It Clears Clutter From My Device’s Desktop
One of the simplest functions of the Stream Deck or any competing device like theLoupeDeckis to create shortcuts for frequently used apps, folders, and bookmarks. This moves them from your screen to your Stream Deck, making your desktop much cleaner. Even a smaller, moreaffordable Stream Deck like the Neo modelcan suffice for this function.
When I say “desktop,” I’m referring to my computer’s desktop screen rather than the physical space on my desk.

While an organized person can likely maintain a clean desktop through other methods, such as using the Apps folder on Mac or any options on Windows, I find the Stream Deck and similar devices to be much more elegant.
Using only your computer requires opening something to reach your organized shortcuts, whereas the Stream Deck is one tap of a button. In short, the Stream Deck is the most convenient way to access shortcuts.

Stream Decks Improve Functionality on Many Apps
In addition to easy access to applications, the Stream Deck also improves the utility of many apps. Elgato’s marketplace features plugins that directly interface with the APIs ofmany applications, such as Discord and Zoom for calls.
These can range from simple functions like muting or unmuting your microphone when on a call in Discord to far more complex tasks, such as specific commands for Photoshop. While memorizing keyboard shortcuts can be faster, the Stream Deck is generally more convenient, and its direct API access for many apps allows for functionality even when the app isn’t in focus.

Elgato Makes Advanced Macros Easy
Beyond improving individual functions, the Stream Deck software features a macro tool calledMulti Action. This lets you create a series of individual functions so that one press can trigger a cascade of results.
On the basic side, you could open multiple applications or websites at once to prepare for specific tasks. Many creators use this tool to go live when streaming, post that they are live, and configure their streaming software all at once.

Even if you produce no content, the possibilities for multi-actions are nearly limitless. For example, I have a multi-action to open Notion and my personal home page, though it’s not particularly elegant. More creative people could look into integrations with other automation tools like Apple Shortcuts and Keyboard Maestro for even more potential. Regardless, multi-action macros benefit far more than just streamers.
The Stream Deck Keeps Getting Updates
The Stream Deck hardware is nice, but the software keeps getting better as it updates. Competitors to the Stream Deck keep popping up, such as LoupeDeck,Logitech’s MX Creative Console, and more, but none of these have Elgato’s ecosystem and software advantage. The Stream Deck has had a huge head start on development and has a much larger community of users.
This also means that a Stream Deck has far more developers making plugins for the device, leading to even further improvements. For additional context, I primarily use a Mac for productivity tasks, soI use my Stream Deck on macOS. While this means I have more limitations than a Windows user who will find more functions and plugins, I’ve always been impressed with the huge volume of productivity plugins for macOS.
I have three different Stream Decks and use them every day. Three may be excessive for most people, but if you don’t have one—or even a Stream Deck alternative—you’re missing out on a world of productivity gains.
