Warning: Contains SPOILERS for Longlegs!
Summary
I lovedLonglegs, but my one major problem with the film is that I can’t believe that none of the film’s characters saw the ending coming. I was incredibly intrigued bythe mystery ofLonglegs, with the various twists and reveals that made the movie a lot of fun. However, by the time the characters figured out what was going on, they shouldn’t have been caught off guardby the ending ofLonglegs.
ThroughoutLonglegs, Agent Harker and Agent Carter are investigating a series of murders carried out byNicolas Cage’s Longlegs serial killer. The film sets up a series of rules that have to do with what families that Longlegs targets, something that I found incredibly intriguing. By the time thatLonglegsgot to its final scene, I was shocked due to the film subtly setting up what happened. While it made sense for me as an audience member to be surprised, however, the characters should have predicted the ending a long time ago.

Agent Carter Should’ve Known Ruby Would Be One Of Longlegs' Targets
It Should Have Been Obvious
Early in the events ofLonglegs,Lee Harker makes some shocking discoveries about Longlegs' method of killing. Firstly, she discovers that Longlegs is set to have a killing take place on the 13th, with her then learning from Agent Carter that every murder has happened to a family whose daughter has a birthday on the 14th. As it turns out, Agent Carter’s daughter was born on the 14th, with the Carter family being Longlegs' final target.
Ruby Carter’s birthday is subtly set up early inLonglegs, so the twist works for the audience’s POV. However, Agent Carter should have known that his family was a potential target, as it is doubtful that he never realized the connection to his daughter’s birthday. The Carter family even explicitly talks about preparing forRuby’s birthday party that the doll appears at, meaning I think it is a huge plot hole for Carter to not have realized the danger that they were in.

Longlegs' Ending Makes Agent Carter & The FBI Look Dumb
How Did Nobody Catch This?
Since nobody caught Ruby Carter’s birthday, the ending ofLonglegsmakes its cast of characters and the FBI as a whole look incredibly dumb. Even if it wasn’t Agent Carter, surely Harker or one of the many other FBI agents could have realized that Ruby’s life was potentially being threatened. The danger of the situation was in front of the FBI’s faces the entire time, so it is strange that nobody did anything to prevent it.
One possible explanation is that Carter simply didn’t think that the killings could still happen afterLonglegs ended his own life. However, Carter still doesn’t seem concerned about the issue before Longlegs' death, with this being the fatal flaw that I believe breaksLonglegs’otherwise airtight story.
