Bo-Katan Kryzebecame a central character inThe Mandalorianstarting with season 2, and she also broke new ground forStar Warsscreen media in herStar Wars: The Clone Warsdebut. Bo-Katan Kryze has an extensive character arc in the modernStar Warscanon, appearing initially as an underling of Pre Vizsla in theDeath Watchterrorist group. Kryze’s redemption arc, while perhaps questionable, eventually made her an incidental ally to the Republic and later Rebellion inStar Wars Rebels. Bo-Katan made her live-action debut and had a significant supporting role inThe Mandalorianseason 2.

For better or worse, Bo-Katan Kryze gradually became a co-protagonist ofThe Mandalorianseason 3, and has become quite popular among some viewers. Long before this, however, the character was already making history for theStar Warsfranchise. It may not be common knowledge, but Bo-Katan was a groundbreaking character, and it has everything to do with her debut.

Bo-Katan Broke A Surprising Record For Star Wars

Mandalorians long precededThe Clone Wars, with the earliest explorations of Mandalorian lore being found in Donald F. Glut’s novelization ofThe Empire Strikes Backand Marvel’s classicStar Warscomics. Unsurprisingly, there are many male and female Mandalorians throughout theStar Warsfranchise, though before Bo-Katan’s introduction, no female Mandalorians were shown onscreen. Dave Filoni spoke of Bo-Katan’s creation in a 2011 interview withIGN.

Jon Favreau’s character, Pre Vizsla, is back, and a lot of things have changed for the Death Watch, as we’ll see. And he had a character who was pretty much his lieutenant and the character wasn’t really named. I always have free will to do whatever I want with that, and I thought, “Well, I’m going to make this a girl. I really want to see that.”

This makes Bo-Katan the first female Mandalorian warrior to ever be shown on screen, with her debut inThe Clone Wars. Notably, Duchess Satine Kryze and numerous civilians of Mandalore debuted onscreen before Bo-Katan. Filoni, however, is likely referring to Bo-Katan as the first female Mandalorian warrior who wears the iconic beskar armor.

The Death Watch itself existed long before the modern canon’sThe Clone Wars, having debuted in the 2002 comic seriesStar Wars: Jango Fett: Open Seasons, by Haden Blackman and Ramón F. Bachs.

How Dave Filoni Created Bo-Katan

Dave Filoni also notes that catering toStar Warscosplayers was one of his motivations for creating Bo-Katan. Not only did Filoni make Kryze the first female Mandalorian warrior onscreen, buthe also gave her a unique helmet design.

So once I decided that, I actually sketched the helmet design – I think I was on an airplane from Burbank to Oakland – and I was just doodling it out. I based the helmet design on a barn owl, because my wife loves owls. So it’s kind of based on the white ghost face of a barn owl.

In-universe, Bo-Katan’s distinctive helmet design represents the Nite Owls, an elite cadre of warriors within the Death Watch. When Darth Maul dueled and killed Pre Vizsla, Bo-Katan and seemingly most of the Nite Owls refused to accept him as their new leader, thus becoming incidental allies to the Republic.

While I appreciate Bo-Katan’s significance in theStar Warsfranchise, I do think that her characterization has several major missed opportunities. I feel that Bo-Katan’s redemption arc was underdeveloped, to say the least, and certainly does not justify her seemingly heroic roles later on. Kryze was part of a vicious terrorist group that murdered innocents and deposed the pacifist New Mandalorian government (led by Bo-Katan’s sister, no less). Bo-Katan’s “redemption” was simply turning on Darth Maul because she would not take orders from an outsider – even if Maul lawfully succeeded Vizsla.

Kryze thus lacks a genuine redemption arc. She becomes an ally to Obi-Wan Kenobi and later Ahsoka simply due to their having a common enemy in Maul. Kryze never expresses remorse for murdering innocents and betraying her sister and her only motivation seems to be claiming theDarksaberand becoming theMand’alor– all traits that ought to make her a straightforward villain.

Bo-Katan Kryze actress Katee Sackhoff perfectly explains why Bo-Katan deserves the forgiveness and love she has finally earned in Star Wars.

The Mandalorianseason 2 ends with Kryze seemingly being set up to become season 3’s antagonist, with the power-hungry Bo-Katan apparently destined to battle the reluctantDin Djarinfor the right to rule the Mandalorian clans.Season 3 was perfectly positioned to call Kryze’s terrorist past and selfish motivation into question, perhaps giving her a real redemption arc or at least having her fail to become the next Mand’alor. The Mandalorianseason 3 chose not to go this route.
