Could Obi-Wan Have Saved Anakin?
Obi-Wan’s guilt over Anakin’s fate is understandable considering his role as Anakin’s teacher. After becoming Darth Vader, finding and destroying Obi-Wan would become Anakin’s primary goal, which only enforced the feeling of responsibility that Obi-Wan felt. After all,Obi-Wan himself was suspicious of Chancellor Palpatine and he knew how close Anakin was to him. Despite his relationship with Anakin, Obi-Wan was too late realizing just how much danger his apprentice was in to help him. Palpatine expertly closed in on Anakin with promises of the power of the dark side while Obi-Wan was busy dispatching General Grievous, making it impossible for Obi-Wan to step in.
Unfortunately for the Jedi,Palpatine wanted Anakin Skywalkerfrom the very beginning, molding his relationship with Anakin into a mentorship that nearly rivaled Anakin’s relationship with Obi-Wan. Anakin’s difficulty adhering to the Jedi’s strict expectations when it comes to controlling his emotions and his need to feel parental leadership placed Palpatine in the perfect position to slowly corrupt Anakin’s faith in the Jedi as an institution despite Obi-Wan’s guidance. As much asObi-Wan Kenobiwould wish that he could have protected Anakin, the events ofStar Warssimply couldn’t have unfolded any other way.
