Spoiler alert: The following article contains spoilers from Twisters.

Summary

Daisy Edgar-Jones' Kate, Glen Powell’s Tyler, and many otherTwisterscharacters use various methods throughout the movie to escape vicious storms, including one of the most popular tornado survival myths. The 2024 disaster film, directed by Lee Isaac Chung and written by Mark L. Smith, serves as a standalone sequel to the 1996 flickTwister. While its plot revolves around passionate storm chasers trying to make a difference likeTwister, the second movie doesn’t include any direct connections to its predecessor’s story or characters (aside fromthe “Dorothy” Easter egg inTwisters’opening scene).

However, similar to the original film, theTwisterscharacters are constantly forced to seek shelter while chasing dangerous tornadoes. Bill Paxton’s Bill and Helen Hunt’s Jo memorably use a leather belt to secure themselves to a pipe that runs underground while in the middle of an F5 tornado. Of course, thisTwisterscene wasn’t accuratebecause Bill and Jo wouldn’t have been able to survive. Meanwhile,Twistersbegins with a devasting sequencewhere Kate and her friends try to take cover in the last place someone wants to be during a storm (as they would likely die, as proven in the sequel).

Kate & Her Team Seek Shelter Under An Overpass In Twisters' Opening Sequence

The Twisters Characters Get Caught Up In An F5 Tornado

Twisters' enthralling opening tornado scenefeatures Kate and her team (including her boyfriend, Jeb, and two friends, Praveen and Addy) working to deploy barrels of sodium polyacrylate formula into a tornado, attempting to reduce its intensity, while Javi stays back and collects data. However, they are unaware of the storm’s magnitude when driving into it. It’s categorized as an F5 (the highest rating), and the characters' car gets pushed off the road.Kate, Jeb, Praveen, and Addy are then forced to seek shelter, and their only option is under an overpass.

Kate is the sole survivor of the incident in the tornado movieTwisters, but in reality, she probably would also have died.

Sadly, Praveen is sucked into the tornado while running toward the overpass, and Addy gets hit and swept away by a large piece of debris while trying to climb up the overpass ramp. Kate and Jeb make it up, but while Kate holds onto the structure, Jeb is only holding onto her, and the wind blows him away. Kate is the sole survivor of the incident inthe tornado movieTwisters, but in reality, she probably would also have died.

I Was Not Expecting David Corenswet’s Twisters Role To Be The Modern Version Of This OG Character

David Corenswet stars as Scott in Twisters, and after watching the film, it’s clear that the role is a replacement for one Twister character.

Is It Really Safe To Hide Under An Overpass During A Tornado?

Experts Warn Against Seeking Shelter Under An Overpass

WhiletheTwisterscharactersutilize an overpass to try to survive a tornado during the movie’s beginning, under an overpass is a dangerous spot to be during a storm. For years, many believed that under an overpass was a safe place to hide when caught up in a storm. However, meteorologists have since debunked this tornado survival method as it actually puts someone at a greater risk of getting killed.Winds are channeled under an overpass, making it easier for debris to hit a person (like Addy) or to get swept away by the winds (like Jeb).

The cast and crew ofTwistershave stated that they would be open to returning for a sequel.

Official poster for Twisters (2024)

Kate, Jeb, and Addy acknowledge that hiding under an overpass is a dangerous spot to bein the 2024 disaster film. Unfortunately, that is their only option and they don’t have time to hesitate. The tornado is heading straight for them, and the overpass is the closest spot. Even though one isn’t supposed to go under an overpass during a storm and that is exactly what the storm chasers do in the movie,Twisters(for the most part) accurately depicts how many would die by using this tornado survival myth.
