Windows uses the “beep/ding” sound to alert about specific actions, such as changing the volume level. While an accessibility feature, the beep sound when changing volume can be annoying, especially if you are wearing a Bluetooth headset.

If you find it annoying, you may turn off the beep sound when adjusting the volume slider on Windows for both the system speaker and Bluetooth headset.

Note that the process of turning off the volume change alert tone differs for your system speaker, wired audio devices and Bluetooth audio devices. The instructions below address each of these separately.

While you can turn off the notification or beep sound in Sound settings, this will not overwrite your headset’s built-in sound profile. For example, the Sennheiser HD 4.40 BT headset comes with a built-in beep and alert sounds to indicate volume adjustment.

In this instance, when connected wirelessly, the headset will continue to make the beep sound whenever you adjust your volume. You can fix this problem by modifying theAbsolute VolumeDWORD in Registry Editor. The Absolute Volume value is associated with the Bluetooth audio devices and their audio/video control profile.

Note that making modifications to the Windows Registry involves risk. Before attempting to make the changes, we recommend youcreate a restore pointandtake a backup of the Windows Registry.

To disable the beep sound in Bluetooth audio devices:

Close Registry Editor and restart your computer. After the restart, use the mouse scroll wheel or touchpad to adjust your Bluetooth headset or speaker volume without the beep sound.

To enable the beep sound again, change the value data to0for theDisableAbsoluteVolumevalue in Registry Editor and clickOK. Restart your computer to apply the changes.

4. Turn Off the Beep Sound Using PowerShell in Windows 10

You can quickly enable or disable the beep sound in Windows 10 using Windows PowerShell. The PowerShell method is useful if you frequently change the sound scheme and don’t want to fiddle with Sound settings all the time.

If you find the beep sound when adjusting your system volume annoying, you can disable it from Sound settings and PowerShell. If you don’t want to turn off the beep sound, try to adjust your volume using the mouse scroll or touchpad without triggering the volume change alert.
