How to Set Up Smoke/CO Alarm Sound Recognition on the HomePod, HomePod mini

Your HomePod or HomePod mini can do much more than play songs.

With the alarm sound recognition feature, you can receive an alert on your iPhone or Apple Watch when away from home if a smoke alarm or carbon monoxide alarm goes off. We’ll show you how to set up the feature and how it works.

What You’ll Need for Alarm Sound Recognition

To use the feature, you’ll need either generation of HomePod or HomePod mini.

You’ll also need to upgrade to the new Apple Home architecture. To do that, update all of your Apple devices to the latest software. That also includesupdating your HomePod or HomePod mini software.

Once that is complete, open the Home app and select theMore …button. ChooseHome Settingsand then andSoftware Update. Finally, you’ll selectLearn Moreunder Home Upgrade Available. Follow the prompts to upgrade.

How to Set Up Alarm Sound Recognition

After moving to the new Home architecture, you can set up the alarm sound recognition feature.

Once again, open the Home app, you should see aSafety & Securitypop-up. ChooseTurn On. Follow the prompts to get everything set up.

If for some reason you don’t see the prompt, you can also select theMore …button. Then chooseHome Settings > Safety & Security.

In that menu, you can toggle the feature on and off for a specific HomePod or completely. InNotifications, you can choose to only receive an alarm notification from a specific HomePod. Finally, you can allow other members of your home to listen for certain alarm sound and communicate with others in the home via the HomePod.

With the feature turned on, the HomePod uses on-device intelligence to listen for an alarm. No data is sent to Apple.
