How to Set Up Additional Accounts on Your Quest 2

When Meta announced that a Facebook account would no longer be required to log into its Quest VR hardware, the announcement was largely looked at through the lens of data privacy. There is still animated discussion over whether the option to sign in with a “Meta account” really does anything to preserve user privacy.

How to Create Additional Accounts on Your Quest 2

The first step is to boot up the headset as you normally would. Once you’re in VR, use the menu to navigate toSettings, thenAccount, and then selectAdd Account.

If you’re adding another account for the first time, select your profile picture from the toolbar at the bottom of the screen and chooseSwitch Accountin the top-right corner of the resulting pop-up menu. This path will allow you to create a new account, routing you through the settings. It’s a bit easier if you don’t know your way around the Quest 2 well.

After choosing to create a new account, a prompt in the headset will invite you to hand the headset over to the other person (if there is another person).

While setting up the headset for the first time requires a mobile app, not every account needs to have the app. So, if you have more than one email, you could just use a different email to create a different account. The new account can even have your real name and birthdate. As long as the email is different, Meta doesn’t care.

Whether you’re creating a second account for yourself or the first account on someone else’s headset, the process is identical tosetting up an Oculus Quest 2 accountfor the first time. Yes, you have to watch the tutorial and safety videos.

After that, it’s on to creating an avatar, setting your display name, and other fun parts of account setup.

Adding an Account to the Quest 2

How Different Quest 2 Accounts Behave

Once a headset is set up for multiple accounts (a Quest 2 can have up to four different accounts), each account holder must create a four-point unlock pattern for their profile. Although the original account becomes the new “admin” account, it doesn’t have special power over the other accounts.

Upon powering up the headset, users can go straight to their profile by entering their unique unlock pattern. Once the headset is on, users can change between accounts through theSwitch Accountpathway described above.

Apps downloaded by the admin account before the additional accounts are created will be shared with subsequent accounts. Although the newer accounts need to download the apps independently, they don’t need to purchase them again. Furthermore, the other account holders can buy and download their own apps.

Account holders can avoid sharing apps by selecting thestacked dots iconin the lower-right corner of the thumbnail for an app and selectingLock. Locked apps appear on other accounts but require the owner’s unlock pattern for access. To encourage app sharing, the admin can turn on theApp Sharingoption in their account settings.

By creating an account for each user, you could let everyoneget started with their own Quest 2 experience.

Personalizing Additional Quest 2 Accounts

Additional account holders have a lot of other personalization options as well. More than that, each account has its own private content. For example, payment methods are unique to each user. So, even though each account can purchase their apps, they can’t use the original account’s payment information without their knowledge.

Each user can also have their own avatar and their own control overoptional Quest 2 control featureslike gesture and voice control.

The ability to host multiple accounts on a single headset has a lot of potential use cases. Headsets are often shared within families, working groups, or classrooms. Further, one individual can have multiple accounts to separate professional and personal apps on the same device. Whatever you might use it for, it’s an excellent option to have.
