What Is Vidyo.ai?
Vidyo.ai is a service that allows you to quickly convert longer videos into short-form content using AI that finds highlights in the video. Unlikeother AI video tools that generate videos, Vidyo is instead an AI video editor.
With the growing necessity for creators to post across multiple platforms for optimal growth, it’s great to see more tools that help yourecycle and repurpose your existing content. However, will using an AI video editor produce usable results?
How to Use Vidyo.ai to Make Short-Form Content
For this demonstration, we’ll use Vidyo.ai to create a Short from an existing YouTube video. After going to theVidyo.ai website, log in with your Google or Facebook account, answer the questions so Vidyo.ai can personalize your account, and follow the steps below.
Generating Clips
To import a video, simply paste the YouTube URL or clickUpload File. Free users are limited to a maximum file size of 5 GB and one concurrent upload.
Next, you’ll receive an email when the analysis is done with numerous clips generated.
Review the clips Vidyo.ai generated via the email link, and select one to edit. Clips will automatically have a visual template in place as well as speech-to-text captions, which you can revise in editing.
Once you select a clip, you can drag the gray bars around your clip to adjust the length.
Editing Your Clips
First, select your aspect ratio—we’re using 9:16 portrait for TikTok, Reels, and Shorts. We recommend that you start by selecting a suitable template. Changing the aspect ratio will reset your clip entirely, and changing templates can negate other edits, so do these first.
Next, revise and edit your subtitles. Vidyo.ai creates surprisingly accurate speech-to-text captions, but it struggles with proper names and technical terms, such as the company “Neewer” in our example clip. That said, formal video editors likeAdobe Premiere Pro have similarly powerful speech-to-text transcription.
You can also customize the visuals of your subtitles with backgrounds, blocks, outlines, and drop shadow effects for all on-screen text. There are also numerous styles you can select for animating the text.
Lastly, you can add additional on-screen elements, such as a visual progress bar to show the length of your video, images, or additional text that will remain present for the full video duration.
Vidyo.ai Pricing and Key Features
Vidyo.ai offers four tiers ranging from free to multiple pro tiers. The free tier offers the following:

The main difference between the tiers is the number of upload minutes. Upload minutes aside, the biggest perk of upgrading from the free to any premium tier is the ability to save multiple project drafts at a time and save templates for efficiency.
Vidyo.ai Limitations and Drawbacks
Vidyo.ai makes creating short-form content extremely simple, but the features are fairly shallow past their added convenience.
For example, the clips Vidyo.ai creates for you will only be continuous segments of the video, not an edit of multiple key moments. When converting a YouTube video to short-form content, it is often better to cut the highlights of a video rather than just a continuous segment, and Vidyo.ai does not do this.
Vidyo.ai’s edits are incredibly quick and convenient, especially with its speech-to-text captions. However, you can make much more sophisticated edits if you are repurposing content in Premiere Pro or other editing software using the original video project.
Moreover, some of the clips Vidyo.ai generates are simply not compelling content for short-form videos. In our example, five clips were generated, but only one was reasonably usable.
Lastly, the number of monthly upload minutes permitted is quite low. The best use case for Vidyo.ai is finding highlights in live streams and podcasts to save time on manual review.
That use case is quite unrealistic as even the Pro and Pro+ tiers’ monthly upload minutes of 300 and 500 are insufficient for streamers and podcasters to use this regularly. A single five-hour stream, which is normal for many streamers, would deplete all 300 upload minutes with the Pro tier.
