Kohiruimaki and his gang hunting aliens

Produced By Production +h.; Directed By Tomoyuki Kurokawa

Following whereDead Dead Demon’s Dededede Destructionepisode #7 left off, episode #8 had Kadode, Ouran, and their friends graduating and getting ready for college. As Kadode moved into her new apartment, she had a run-in with Kohiruimaki, Kiho’s ex-boyfriend whom she dumped after he fell down a rabbit hole of conspiracy theories. That hadn’t changed when he ran into Kadode, and while he only acted vaguely creepy around Kadode, it was later revealed thatKohiruimaki had taken it upon himself to hunt invaders in Tokyo.

Amidst all that, episode #8 occasionally cut to Futaba Takemoto, a girl from the countryside going to college in Tokyo despite the protests of her friends and family. Futaba was unexpectedly joined on her flight by Makoto, an old friend of hers who suddenly came out a trans woman, and while she didn’t really understand it, she made it clear that she wouldn’t hold anything against Makoto because of it. That formed a segway into Futaba revealing the real reason she wanted to go to Tokyo:Futaba wished to join the protests against the government’s treatment of the invaders.

During Futaba and Makoto’s flight, their plane abruptly changed course to get out of the way of the government shooting down alien spacecrafts with their new weapon, a powerful laser called the Chokujin Daiba. Kadode, who watched it along with her friends, narrated about how they were all so naive at the time and were completely unprepared for the events of August 32. The last shot was of countless alien corpses filling the screen before an ominous text message appeared saying thathumanity would end in six months.

Despite changing the mange in the big way, the anime has started to bridge the gap it established early on

Dead Dead Demon’s Dededede Destructionepisode #0started the series off on an odd note with the reveal that the war between the humans and the invaders will escalate to the point of turning Japan into a toxic wasteland run by a corrupt government, and it was always disconnected from the largely low stakes plotting of the main story. However,Dead Dead Demon’s Dededede Destructionepisode #8 setting a ticking clock for the end of humanity finally connects the narrative to episode #0, and that suggests the series will finally begin to build up to how that story comes about.

On the surface, that connection makes it seem as if everyone is destined to die, but that might not be the case. The mysterious flashback arc from several episodes prior teased the idea of it being possible to travel through time and space, something Ouran might have unintentionally done to save Kadode, and as such,Ouran or someone else might use their abilities as a Shifter to save the world. How that would play out is unknown, but it leaves a lot to be excited about for future episodes of the series, regardless.

Countless alien corpses falling from the sky

The show’s narrative has moved to disscusing the cast as they grow up, making the looming supernatural threat even more interesting

Dead Dead Demon’s Dededede Destructionepisode #8 was about the main characters growing up and maturing, and going right along with that, episode #8 saw the overarching narrative mature. Between the setup of new characters, the slow evolution of old characters into dangerous threats, and the reveal of the overarching stakes,Dead Dead Demon’s Dededede Destructionepisode #8 is the episode that pushed the narrative forward more than any other, and that made it great to watch.Dead Dead Demon’s Dededede Destruction’s animeis heading in a great direction, and hopefully, it will more than succeed at sticking the landing.
