“I think it’s reasonable to imagine that we will start talking about the next Borderlands movie here. Maybe before the end of the year, we’ll see. Maybe sooner. But we are we are working very hard. And I have the biggest and best team that I’ve ever had working on what we know is exactly what our fans want from us. So I’m very, very thrilled. I can’t wait to talk about it. I wish I could just gush right now.”

Will Borderlands 2 Happen?

It Will All Depend On The First Movie

It’s not hard to see why there’s interest from Gearbox and producers to make aBorderlands 2. There are now seven games in the successful and beloved franchise, so clearly there’s plenty of source material to draw from for a future film. Some fan-favorite characters from the games, like Mordecai and Brick, for example, also don’t appear in this first installment, so they could certainly fit into a sequel. Pitchford has previously revealed the intention to create aBorderlands"cinematic universe," which could end up being a profitable way to expand the franchise.

What Planet Borderlands Takes Place On: Video Game History Explained

The trailer for the Borderlands movie showcases many of the beloved characters from the games. However, the central planet is equally as important.

Whether a sequel happens, however, will depend on how the first film performs. Reviews and social media reactions for the film haven’t been shared yet since they’re still under embargo, butthe response to the trailers and marketing thus far hasn’t been overly positive. There have been criticisms directed at the movie’s PG-13 rating and the fact that the film doesn’t adapt a story from the games. CertainBorderlandscastingchoices, too, have come under fire, with some actors not looking much like their game counterparts.

Borderlands 2024 Movie Poster

Borderlands' budget remains unknown, so it’s not clear how much the film would need to earn to be considered a success. If, for example, the movie features a $90 million budget, it would likely need to earn in the ballpark of $225 million to break even. Even if theBorderlandsreviews end up being positive,an underperformance of the film at the box office certainly has the potential to kill any chances of a sequel.
