The Cat in the Hatwas a spectacular misfire, garnering a miserable 10% on Rotten Tomatoes. After the film’s poor reception, Dr Seuss’ widow, Aubrey Geisel, decided not to allow any subsequent live-action adaptions of her husband’s work. This put an end to any sequel plans and the film went on to receive 10 Razzie nominations, including Worst Supporting Actor for Alec Baldwin. However, despite the disastrous release,The Cat in the Hathas since developed a cult following, with audiences embracing the wacky slapstick world and the movie appearing across internet memes and ironic fan celebrations.
Cat In The Hat Is Surprisingly One Of Alec Baldwin’s Best Villain Movie Roles
Nobody could deny that everybody inThe Cat in the Hatis fully committed to their performance. One of the best examples of this is Baldwin, giving a villain turn that, despite initial giggles, will have the audience truly fearful of Larry Quinn’s neurotic wrath. Baldwin has a talent for playing unbridled arrogance, and here,Quinn is the epitome of small-time suburban entitlement. Baldwin also perfects the comedic sneeze, as Quinn is unfortunately allergic to cats, especially the human-sized one now running around. Pulling no punches, Baldwin sacrifices his dignity for the good of what turns out to be a flawed children’s movie.
However, Baldwin is not the true villain of the film. The actual Cat in the Hat is, as Myers plays the role with a mischievousness that could be mistaken for sadism. Instead of endearing himself to the children, the Cat brings havoc upon them, destroying their home with an array of fanciful gadgets and sinister minions. Myers couples his overpowering charisma with a seeming thirst for pain in a strange blend of hisAustin Powersperformance and Jim Carry’sTheMask. The Cat in the Hatis not a good movie but it is an unforgettable one. With two committed villain performances, it is well worth the time to check it out on Netflix.
