Sequel Movies Celebrate Anniversary of Anime

“Daily Life” May Include Both Sides of Comedy and Spy Action

Lycoris’sdirector, Shingo Adachi, revealed the existence of a follow-up movie as early as February 2023, though no further news emerged after that. The end of the radio silence and the reveal of not one but six small movies is a welcome reprieve forLycorisfans, be it those who fell in love with the charisma of Chisato and Takina, or the setting of an alternate-present Tokyo that provides moreguns and gadgets than anime has seen in yearsamid the craze for fantasy works. One of the remaining questions is what content the six movies will occupy themselves with.

At least, the image of Chisato and Takina in uniform seems to suggest that the movies will be interspersed during the original show’s storyline. While the story is concise, it includes unspoken time skips between major events that are ideal for inserting extra stories unrelated to the original plot. Though it’s tempting to assume “daily life” equates to slice-of-life comedy shenanigans, with any luck, fans will also get to see Chisato and Takina getting into firefights - the other half of the show’s identity. All six movies cannot be spent on just domestic comedy, lest that formula becomes boring from overexposure.

Regardless, fans have been eager to see more of A-1 Pictures' spy series.Lycoris Recoilwas a popular entry in the Fall 2022 season, even becoming one of the fewanime recommended by video game auteur Hideo Kojima. Much of that can be attributed to the two main leads and their comedic interactions, something the upcoming movies are likely looking to capitalize on. While the post on X shows no concrete release dates, the inclusion of the “LycoReco 2nd Anniversary” hashtag suggests A-1 wants to release trailers, further information, or even theLycoris Recoilmovies themselves before 2024 is out.
