Summary

Thoris one of the most powerful entities in the Marvel Universe, which makes sense, given that he’s a literal god within a family of gods, all of whom boast similar levels of cosmic power. While Thor is easily the most famous of his family members, that shouldn’t suggest the rest aren’t worth knowing. There are a few who Marvel Comics fans are already familiar with, like Loki, Hela, and Odin, but Thor’s family is far more extensive than that - as are the power levels of each member, no matter how obscure they may be.

Thor is from Asgard, but he’s actually more of a demigod as opposed to a pureblood Asgardian, asThor’s father is Odin and his mother is Gaea. The circumstances of his existence are quite similar to those of the rest of his family, with Asgardian hybrids spanning every corner of the Marvel Universe. Other members of Thor’s family aren’t ‘Asgardian hybrids’ at all, but rather elder gods of near incomprehensible strength. Among them all, these are the10 most powerful members of Thor’s family in Marvel lore!

Ullr, the God of Doom, announcing his presence upon his debut in The Immortal Thor.

10Ullr the God of Doom is Thor’s Most Terrifying Sibling

First Appearance:The Immortal Thor#11 by Al Ewing and Valentina Pinti

Ullr, the God of Doom, is perhaps Thor’s closest blood relative, given that he shares both his parents with the God of Thunder, Odin and Gaea. As his title would suggest,Ullr is a god of immense power; so great, in fact, that his very presence strikes fear in the hearts of other gods. While little is known about the God of Doom, one of the more impressive stories about him is that it is said he helped create magic in the Marvel Universe.

Ullr was called upon inThe Immortal Thor#11 to help find their lost brother, Tyr, since Ullr is the only God of Asgard with the ability to travel to the domain of the In-Betweener. Even among his brethren, Ullr stands out as one of the most powerful, and easily the most terrifying.

Loki grinning with a world on fire behind them.

9Loki the God of Mischief and Stories is a Constant Marvel Nuisance

First Appearance (as Thor’s Brother):Journey into Mystery#85 by Stan Lee, Larry Lieber, and Jack Kirby

Loki is easily the most famous of Thor’s siblings, not only because they reigned as Thor’s arch rival for the majority of the God of Thunder’s publication history, but because the God of Mischief was also the one who inadvertently formed the Avengers. Since then, Loki has been on a steady path of redemption, even changing their godly title from that of Mischief to the God of Stories.

While they may be more or less a hero now,Loki spent most of their time in Marvel Comics canon being a wicked villainof the highest order. Bringing the Avengers together while making a play for world domination was just one of Loki’s many schemes, which would range from being heinously evil to downright silly. But, no matter what, Loki never failed to flex their immense power.

Hela, the Goddess of Death, standing with her arms open in front of a destroyed piece of wall.

8Hela the Goddess of Death is Quite Literally Thor’s Niece from Hel

First Appearance:Journey into Mystery#102 by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby

Hela is the daughter of Loki, which makes her Thor’s niece - and she’s quite literally a niece from Hel. Hela is the Goddess of Death, and upon her maturity, Odin crowned her the Queen of Hel, forcing her to preside over the souls of the dead for all eternity after Odin was warned by the three Asgardian Goddesses of Fate, the Norns, that she would grow to be a great danger to all of Asgard.

The fact that Odin himself feared Hela’s power enough to essentially lock her in the underworld is proof enough of her immense power, but Hela proves as much herself with every Marvel Comics appearance. From being a Hell Lord to even joining Thanos for a time as a part of his Black Order, there is no shortage of instances where Hela is an absolute powerhouse.

Angela, the sister of Thor, standing in space with angelic bands circling her.

7Angela the Hunter Angel is Thor’s Long-Lost Sister who Originated in Spawn

First Appearance (as Thor’s Sister):Age of Ultron#10 by Brian Michael Bendis, Alex Maleev, Bryan Hitch, Butch Guice, Brandon Peterson, Carlos Pacheco, David Marquez, and Joe Quesada

Angela is the daughter of Odin who was kidnapped by the angels during their war against Asgard as a way to force Odin to surrender. Odin refused, and instead abandoned his daughter by sealing the angels in another dimension. WhenAngela reached maturity, she became a powerful Hunter Angel, and her first on-panel mission was in the pages of an entirely different comic book universe:Spawn.

Angela originated as aSpawncharactercreated by Neil Gaiman, but when she was brought into the Marvel Universe, it was explained that she only appeared inSpawnas a direct result of being stolen from Asgard. Upon her chronological return to the Marvel Universe, Angela wasted no time in proving that she was on-par with the likes of Thor and the rest of her family, after already doing so inSpawn.

Thor standing with his mother, Gaea, in front of a bright light.

First Appearance:Doctor StrangeVol. 2 #6 by Steve Englehart and Gene Colan

Gaea is the mother of Thor, and is easily one of the most powerful members of the God of Thunder’s family. She is an Elder God, one of the first born from the darkness of a new universe. Unlike her siblings, who all consumed each other and subsequently became demons, Gaea gave life to the Sun God, who devoured most of Gaea’s demonic siblings and allowed her to continue bringing about new life - arguably proving that she’s the strongest of some of Marvel’s original gods.

Being an Elder God of Earth as well as Thor’s birth mother,Gaea is Thor’s true connection to Midgard. Since he was a young god, Thor has always been drawn to Earth, and eventually became one of its greatest protectors as an Avenger, and Gaea is perhaps the biggest reason that’s the case.

Comic book art: A horned demonic entity Chthon standing in a hellish world, his red cape blowing behind him.

5Chthon the God of Chaos is the Uncle Thor Wishes He Never Had

First Appearance (as Chthon):Avengers#186 by David Michelinie, Mark Gruenwald, Steven Grant, and John Byrne

Chthon is the brother of Gaea and fellow Elder God who - like the rest of Gaea’s siblings - became a demonic entity. After surviving Gaea’s firstborn son, the Sun God, Atum, Chthon only grew in darkness, and decided to capture his dark magic in a text that would bring about misery within the Marvel Universe for years to come: the Darkhold.Any time the Darkhold is used, Chthon’s presence can be felt, even if he’s not physically present - that’s how powerful this Elder God is.

Given his immense evil and untold power, it’s clear to see why Thor wishes Chthon wasn’t a member of his family, especially given how much trouble he has caused one of Thor’s fellow Avengers members, Scarlet Witch. However, whether Thor likes it or not, Chthon is a blood relative - and a powerful one, at that.

Cul the God of Fear aka the Serpent standing with his arms open wide, surging with power.

4Cul the God of Fear (aka The Serpent) is Somehow a Worse Uncle to Thor than Chthon

First Appearance:Fear Itself#1 by Matt Fraction and Stuart Immonen

The brother of Odin, Cul, the God of Fear, somehow tops Chthon as Thor’s most wicked uncle, asthere are few gods who have shaken the entire Marvel Universe the way Cul did upon his debut inFear Itself. During that storyline, Cul nearly brought about the end of the world by unleashing a number of cursed hammers that turned some of Marvel’s heaviest hitters (Hulk, Thing, Juggernaut, etc.) into soldiers of Cul known as the Worthy.

The Worthy nearly brought the Earth to its knees, shining as horrific examples of Cul’s frightening strength - though he was more than capable of doing so himself. During his final battle with Thor, where the God of Thunder wielded the only weapon that could hurt Cul, the Odinsword, Cul killed Thor before dying himself, a feat almost no other god can boast.

Odin with his long white beard, eye patch, and red cape with Thor crouched behind him.

3Odin, Thor’s Father, Wields Power that Transcends His Physical Form

First Appearance:Journey into Mystery#85 by Stan Lee, Larry Lieber, and Jack Kirby

Odin is a Marvel God who needs no introduction, as he’s famously the father of Thor, who ruled over Asgard for thousands of years before finally being succeeded by the God of Thunder. While his immense strength speaks for itself in any given storyline he’s featured in, one of the more fascinating aspects of Odin’s power is the Odin-Force, which proves the All-Father wields a unique cosmic energy that transcends his physical form.

The Odin-Force is passed down to every ruler of Asgard, acting as a manifestation of their collective power, which was first granted to Odin upon his succession of the throne. The Odin-Force not only holds Odin’s very essence, but it also makes one practically invinciblewhile amplifying their god-tier strength to a near incalculable degree, which alone is not only proof of Odin’s power, but also his legacy.

Bor, the grandfather of Thor, dual-wielding battle axes while screaming a war cry.

2Bor, Thor’s Grandfather, Founded Asgard as It is Known Today

First Appearance:Journey into Mystery#97 by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby

Bor is Odin’s father, Thor’s grandfather, who was responsible for founding Asgard as it is known today.Bor was a valiant warrior, almost single-handedly establishing the Gods of Asgard as some of the most powerful entitiesin the Marvel Universe. It is because of Bor that Asgard has dominion over the Ten Realms, as he and his armies traveled across the cosmos, proving their unparalleled might wherever they went.

Bor was even resurrected for a time by Loki in the modern age of Marvel Comics canon, and his return brought untold death and destruction until he was finally stopped by Thor. However, that glimpse into Bor’s strength is nothing compared to the stories that are told of his time as a cosmic conqueror, when he made Asgard what it is today.

Tiwaz, the great-grandfather of Thor, with his long white beard and thick fur coat.

1Tiwaz, aka Buri, is the Great-Grandfather of Thor, & the Father of the Entire Asgardian Race

Tiwaz is another Elder God who was created at the same time as Gaea and Chthon. When war broke out among them, Tiwaz was able to best Atum and remain uncorrupted by the demonic plague that most of his siblings succumbed to. After being frozen for a time, Tiwaz started going by Buri, at which point he began siring children that would carry his legacy into the modern age of Asgardian history.

Tiwaz is just one of the many Elder Gods in Thor’s bloodline, though he stands alone as perhaps the most significant due to the fact thatTiwaz’s strength gave life to the Asgardian race, creating a lineage of immensely powerful gods with direct ties to the origins of practically every god in the Marvel Universe. Which is why Tiwaz is easily one of the 10 most powerful members of Thor’s family.
